Reflecting on Meaningful Gifts

I've shared stories about my stepfather, Bob Cohan, before. He had a knack for discovering new British procedurals and a love for his label maker. He and my mother found each other 13 years ago after losing their spouses, creating a beautiful blend of families.

Sadly, Bob passed away over the weekend after battling an undetected cancer. He was surrounded by those he cherished.

This morning, I realized he left us with a valuable gift: his Letter of Instruction and Suggestion. This document served as a guide for us, detailing crucial contacts, account information, and important papers. I had written my own version years ago, but I truly grasped its significance after reading his.

Bob detailed his wishes for the next few days, who should take charge, and even event logistics. He infused this document with his characteristic grace and humor. I plan to revisit my own letter in his memory.

Understanding Financial Advisors

Many of you have expressed interest in seeking professional financial advice. If you're new to this, you probably have questions. This week, with insights from my friend Pam Krueger, we'll provide you with essential information on finding the right advisor, understanding minimum requirements, and what to expect during meetings. Check it out and reach out if you have more questions.

Supply Chain Challenges Ahead

While the supply chain shouldn't dictate personal relationships, it's causing concern as the holiday season approaches. Amazon has assured customers they're ready for what could be a "challenging holiday season" due to supply chain issues and labor shortages. Online out-of-stock notifications have risen by 172% compared to last year, indicating potential delays and unavailable products.

Retailers are encouraging early shopping to avoid last-minute stress. For example, Amazon kicked off "Black Friday-worthy" deals in early October. Other retailers, including Macy's and Walmart, are also launching promotions soon. You can find early deals to get ahead, but be cautious; discounts might not be as significant this year as in the past.

These challenges prompt us to reconsider the act of gift-giving. Families are opting for experiences, like trips to Disney, instead of traditional gifts. Movements like Buy Nothing are gaining traction, focusing on community sharing and reducing consumption, with 6,700 groups worldwide. While we may not trade unusual items, there's beauty in giving new life to unwanted possessions after a year of loss.

The Value of IT Support

Lastly, a recent essay by a retirement expert shares insights gained over decades of study, highlighting unexpected lessons learned upon retirement. His reflections emphasize the importance of supportive communities and the challenges of self-reliance in technology.

We appreciate your time this week.
