I spoke to nine expats and full-time travelers to hear their unique experiences during the pandemic. They shared insights on how different countries managed COVID-19 and what it's like to be abroad in these challenging times. From Argentina to Australia, here are their stories of lockdowns, evacuations, and finding normalcy.
Shanghai, China:
Work Visa Renewal and Contact Tracing

Name: Jessica Dumas
Nationality: USA
Current Location: Shanghai, China
Instagram: @Jess_dumas
I first learned about COVID-19 just before Lunar New Year. Initially, I wasn't too concerned as I headed to the Philippines for vacation. However, as news spread while I was snorkeling, I realized the severity of the situation back home. Friends urged me to return as cases rose. After a brief stay in the U.S., I returned to Shanghai with my visa expiring soon. The flight was packed with passengers in hazmat suits, and I underwent extensive health checks upon arrival. After a two-week quarantine, life in Shanghai resumed with new health protocols, including QR code tracking and temperature checks. It felt safe to be in a community that took health seriously.
Future Travel Plans:
I plan to explore more of China this year, particularly Xi'an and Yunnan Province, once travel restrictions ease.
El Bolson, Argentina:
Living Off the Land in Patagonia

Name: Jodie Mohrhardt
Nationality: American
Current Location: El Bolson, Argentina
Website/Social media: @Jodiemohrhardt & thefoxandthetoad.com
I was on a year-long sabbatical when Argentina went into lockdown, trapping me in El Bolson. Initially, we couldn't leave the hostel even for walks, but after weeks, we were allowed some outdoor time. This experience turned into an opportunity to connect with nature and learn about sustainable living. I thrived in a communal environment, cooking with others and exploring new skills like gardening and permaculture. Although it was challenging not to travel as planned, I embraced the beauty of my surroundings and the community I found.
With travel restrictions easing, I've enjoyed outdoor activities and plan to return home soon. Yet, I know I'll be back to this breathtaking region.
Bansko, Bulgaria:
Evacuation Flights & A Personal Loss

Name: Camille Poiré
Nationality: French
Current Location: Bansko, Bulgaria
Websites: ForTravelista & Camille in Wonderlands
Instagram: @CamWonderlands
My boyfriend and I were in Thailand when the pandemic escalated. After an incredible diving trip, we faced uncertainty about our travel plans. With borders closing, we decided to return to our new home in Bulgaria. We activated our travel insurance for a political evacuation, but upon arrival, we faced quarantine in Sofia due to Bansko's lockdown. Once settled in Bansko, we enjoyed the beauty of our new apartment, but tragedy struck as my father passed away from COVID. Mourning while fearing for my mother's health added to the emotional strain.
Future Travel Plans:
We're focusing on enjoying summer in Bulgaria and planning to visit family in France. Exploring neighboring countries is also on our agenda, as well as enjoying winter sports in Bansko next season.
Da Nang, Vietnam:
The Ideal Lockdown Location

Name: Marilyn Solomon
Nationality: British
Current Location: Da Nang, Vietnam
Instagram: marilyn_in_vietnam
The Good:
My rooftop apartment became my sanctuary during lockdown. The restrictions lasted only three weeks, making my experience surprisingly manageable. I embraced local markets, forming connections within the community, and established a routine that kept me grounded.
The Bad:
Initially, the atmosphere shifted from welcoming to fearful as locals viewed foreigners with suspicion. Yet, I respected their feelings and kept my distance, choosing to stay local.
The Crazy:
Despite being stuck, I faced visa challenges with no flights available to renew my status. The government maintained strict regulations, and even during lockdown, Da Nang felt eerily calm. The lack of tourists was palpable as local businesses struggled.
Future Travel Plans:
Borders remain closed, so I'll stay in Vietnam for now. Once conditions improve, I aim to explore more of Southeast Asia, but for now, I appreciate the safety and community here.
Singapore:
A Family's Journey Abroad

Name: The Kimelia Family (Jeanhee, Luke, Chiara, Jemma)
Nationality: USA
Current Location: Singapore
Instagram: @Kimelias.Eat
We left New York City in August 2019, traveling through Southeast Asia before settling in Singapore. Our move coincided with the pandemic, leading to an interesting experience as we adapted to life here. The government responded swiftly, distributing masks and hand sanitizer. Our lockdown began on April 7, allowing us to settle into a routine, albeit challenging for our teenage daughter.
Future Travel Plans:
We have no immediate travel plans due to ongoing uncertainty. Once restrictions ease, we plan to explore more of Singapore and Southeast Asia, but we'll prioritize safety.
Western Australia:
Road Tripping the Remote North

Name: Nina Mariana Pascha
Nationality: Netherlands and Thailand
Current Location: Western Australia

I was working in Western Australia when lockdowns began. Despite fears, work continued in the shearing sheds, creating a bubble where I felt relatively safe. After finishing my job, I embarked on a planned road trip despite ongoing restrictions. While some campsites were closed, I relished the chance to explore the beautiful northern coast.
Future Travel Plans:
With borders reopening, I'll continue my road trip towards Queensland. I hope to work along the way, embracing the freedom of exploration in Australia.
Tokyo, Japan:
Writing a Book Amidst the Pandemic

Name: Becky Gillespie
Nationality: American
Current Location: Tokyo, Japan

I was in Japan for a six-week trip when the pandemic began, initially planning to travel to South Africa. With borders closing, I opted to stay in Japan where I have permanent residency. This decision allowed me to focus on my writing and explore the country further.
Future Travel Plans:
I hope to travel to Europe and Mexico later this year, depending on the situation. For now, I'm enjoying Japan's rich culture and beautiful landscapes.
London, England:
Adapting After Lockdown

Name: Jackie Rezk
Nationality: U.S.
Current Location: London, U.K.

I was in London when the pandemic hit, transitioning to remote work. The initial isolation was tough, but I found ways to connect with friends virtually. As lockdown eased, I embraced the city's beauty and discovered new hobbies. This period taught me to appreciate the little things in life.
Future Travel Plans:
I'm excited to travel to Italy soon, exploring the Puglia region while working remotely. I look forward to reigniting my passion for travel while staying safe.
Bali, Indonesia:
Surfing and Safety

Name: Ashley Clawson
Nationality: U.S.
Current Location: Bali, Indonesia
Instagram: @bearnomadic
I faced multiple flight cancellations before finally arriving in Bali, and despite the pandemic, I found a sense of security here. The initial lockdown was brief, and many local businesses adapted by staying open. The Balinese community has been resilient, and as restrictions ease, I've been enjoying outdoor activities.
Future Travel Plans:
My plans have shifted significantly, but I'm embracing the opportunity to stay in Bali longer. I look forward to exploring more of Indonesia while enjoying the culture and natural beauty around me.
Stay safe and remember to wear a mask!
