The Shark Cordless PowerDetect Clean and Empty System stands out as Shark's most powerful cordless vacuum, designed with a foldable telescopic tube for easy access under furniture. However, its difficult base station and modest reverse pickup could be improved.
Reasons to Buy
Unmatched suction power among cordless models
Effortless pickup of dust, debris, and pet hair on all surfaces
Versatile design with a folding wand for hard-to-reach areas
Self-emptying base station option
Reasons to Avoid
Relatively high price point
Cradle placement for the vacuum can be tricky
Reverse suction isn't as robust as claimed
This powerful cordless vacuum has made significant strides compared to Shark's earlier models. Its foldable telescopic tube enhances accessibility, allowing users to reach tight spaces with ease.
Equipped with impressive suction power, even surpassing the Shark Cordless Detect Pro, this model also features a self-emptying base station that provides storage for all attachments, along with Shark's odor neutralizer puck.
I spent a week testing the Shark Cordless PowerDetect on various surfaces, evaluating its performance and features to see if it justifies its $500 price tag.

Unboxing and Setup

The odor-neutralizer puck
Setting up the Shark Cordless PowerDetect Clean and Empty System is a breeze. It arrives in multiple pieces that effortlessly clip together, transforming it from box to vacuum in under a minute.
Inside the box, the base station comes as a single unit, with an additional side stand for one attachment tool. The vacuum itself consists of three components: the floorhead, telescopic tube, and handheld unit that contains the dust cup and motor.
Additionally, this model includes Shark's odor neutralizer technology. The puck is easy to install in the base station and needs periodic replacement.
Design and Features

Close-up of the main floorhead
This vacuum features a stylish dark gray, white, and purple design. Its self-emptying base station doubles as a charging dock, keeping your vacuum stored neatly while ensuring it's always ready for use.
The dustbin, designed to hold around 45 days' worth of debris, is easy to remove and empty. While some may prefer bags for less mess, this model eliminates the need for them.
The only drawback is the snug fit of the vacuum in the base station, making it essential to place it back gently to ensure proper charging and self-emptying.
The vacuum operates smoothly with a dual brushroll floorhead that engages only when in use. It has built-in lights to reveal hidden debris, enhancing cleaning efficiency.
The telescopic tube's foldable design is a standout feature, allowing you to easily reach under furniture. A simple lever press bends it into an L-shape, providing access without awkward bending.

The screen shows battery life and suction mode
The handheld section contains user-friendly controls, including a power button and trigger for mode selection. An LED panel displays battery status and mode, cycling through eco, auto, and max settings.
Two attachment tools—crevice and pet-multi—secure easily to the handheld unit for versatile cleaning across various surfaces.
Performance Tests

Use the telescopic tube to reach under furniture
The Shark Cordless PowerDetect excels in suction power, boasting 380 watts, the highest among Shark's cordless models. It outperforms the Shark Stratos and Shark Cordless Detect Pro, which use 309 and 240 watts, respectively.
In tests across carpets, upholstery, and hard floors, this vacuum consistently tackled debris and dust. After cleaning two untouched rooms, the dust cup was filled with pet hair and dirt, showcasing its efficiency.

Flour, sugar, seasoning and cereal on hardwood floor
During a test with various materials, including cereal and flour, the Shark Cordless PowerDetect demonstrated strong forward suction, although larger items like Cheerios required additional passes to pick up fully.
While its backward suction isn't as effective, the vacuum performs admirably overall, easily handling edges and covering entire rooms efficiently. The foldable tube simplifies cleaning under furniture without the need for awkward bending.
The handheld unit is lightweight, making it easy to use with attachments for upholstery and high areas. Although slightly heavier than corded models, its performance remained strong across all tasks.

Handheld mode
For carpeted areas, this vacuum excels, particularly in spaces where pets frequent, pulling up hair and dirt that's often overlooked. While not as powerful as upright vacuums, it offers sufficient suction for most household needs.
Keep in mind, this model is on the louder side, with eco mode at 68 dB and max mode reaching 72 dB. While not unusual for vacuums, it may not be suitable for nighttime cleaning.
Battery life is rated at 70 minutes. However, on high settings, expect to see decreased usage time. Eco mode still provides excellent cleaning capability, lasting the full 70 minutes.
Maintenance

Maintenance is straightforward with the Shark Cordless PowerDetect. The modular design allows easy disassembly for cleaning, and both the dust cup and bin are conveniently accessible.
The base station features removable, washable filters for added convenience. Cleaning the floorhead is simple, with a latch for the felt brushroll, while the other brushroll offers enough clearance to handle any tangles.
Comparison with Other Models
Though comparing the Shark Cordless PowerDetect with the Dyson Gen5detect may seem unfair due to the price difference, it's helpful to highlight their similarities, such as battery life and features. The Shark model adds value with its self-emptying base station and foldable tube.
The Dyson, however, is lighter, boasts superior illumination, and provides detailed battery and performance information on its LED panel. While it's a better vacuum, it comes at a higher price.
Additionally, comparing it to the Dyson V8 Animal cordless vacuum shows that while the Dyson is cheaper, it lacks features like a self-emptying base and has a smaller dust cup, along with shorter battery life.
Verdict
Having tested various Shark products, I can confidently say the Shark Cordless PowerDetect Clean and Empty System is their finest cordless offering yet.
While the price may deter some, its features like folding capability, long battery life, and powerful suction certainly justify the investment. Although it cannot match the suction of corded models, its convenience and functionality make it a worthy contender.
In summary, the few drawbacks include the tricky base station and less effective reverse suction, but the overall performance and features make it an excellent choice.
