Bold dining tables are making a statement in 2022. With the growing trend of open-plan living, the traditional dining room has become less relevant. However, the pandemic has pushed many to explore broken-plan designs, allowing for creative multipurpose areas in their homes. This shift has paved the way for one of our favorite design trends this year.

After years dominated by neutral tones, homeowners are increasingly drawn to uplifting colors that resonate with their personal style. It's no surprise that when it comes to decorating dining rooms, people are eager for options that are vibrant and full of character.

Here, we showcase some of our favorite joyful dining tables that can enhance your dining experience and add a touch of wonder.

If you're interested in small dining room ideas, we have plenty of inspiration. Our selection features various shapes, colors, and materials to meet all your dining table decor needs.

1. Embrace Wood Stains for Subtle Color

When considering a colorful dining table, wood stains offer a sophisticated touch without overwhelming the space. This option is perfect for those hesitant to make bold color choices.

As Henry Tadros, Director of L.Ercolani, notes, "A stained finish allows the table's grain to shine through, giving you rich color while showcasing the natural beauty of solid wood." He also advises, "Pair it with complementary colors, but keep it simple to ensure the table remains the focal point of the room."

The Plank table, priced at $1897.75/£1,440, can be found at L.Ercolani and comes in a variety of shades from its Modern Tones Collection, which subtly reinvents the brand's heritage through modern color palettes.

2. Choose Unexpected Hues

Daniel Aram, Managing Director of Aram, observes that interest in colorful tables surged following the launch of the Bell coffee and side tables by Sebastian Herkner in 2012. This increased demand for color comes as a reaction to the dominance of natural wood tones in mid-century design.

Daniel explains, "The growing preference for vibrant colors reflects a desire to step away from the mainstream natural finishes. The popularity of occasional tables led to the introduction of a dining table featuring a glass base available in various color options."

The LC6 table, priced at $4492.67/£3,409, designed by Le Corbusier, Jeanneret & Perriand for Cassina at Aram, perfectly melds mid-century style with a modern splash of color. Daniel highlights that many designers continue to embrace this trend, citing new releases like the Smalto table by Barber Osgerby for Knoll and the Pli colorful metal table by Victoria Wilmotte for ClassiCon.

To style the LC6 table, Daniel suggests, "The glass top showcases the architectural base rather than obscuring it. In open-plan spaces, this hint of color can be complemented by a sofa, lighting, or other pieces in similar or tonal colors."

3. Pair Bold Colors with Natural Materials

This year saw the debut of the Two Color table, starting from $1105.71/£839, designed by Muller Van Severen for Hay. This table, available in rectangular or circular designs, features a simple aesthetic offered in a variety of striking and contrasting colors.

According to Rolf Hay, Co-Founder of HAY, this table's versatility allows it to be paired with bold chairs for a vibrant look or more subdued seating for a balanced effect. "Despite its colorful nature, it can adapt beautifully to different styles, creating distinct atmospheres depending on the combination."

Rolf notes that the Two Color table was developed through a partnership with Muller Van Severen, a duo known for their daring color selections. He adds, "We're working on a new project with them, expected to launch in late summer 2022, that promises to be just as colorful."

4. Make Bold Choices, But Stay True to Yourself

Isabelle Dubern-Mallevays, Co-founder of The Invisible Collection, suggests that while trends are not the focus, colorful dining tables can satisfy the yearning for cheerful, lively elements post-pandemic. "The Luco dining table, priced at $14,565.27/£11,052, features a chunky base and a curved oval top, making it a striking centerpiece for any dining area. Its vibrant lacquer finish feels very contemporary."

Isabelle believes a colorful dining table serves as an anchor for your decor, helping to establish the overall aesthetic of the room. "It can truly define how you set the table for gatherings, acting as a stunning focal point for entertaining guests."

She recommends pairing a bold table with neutral accessories like plates and napkins or enriching the look with maximalist details that match the table's color for an impactful statement.

Isabelle adds that The Invisible Collection features a variety of designers who are successfully incorporating vibrant colors into their work, stating, "With designers like Campbell Rey, Vincent Darré, Chloe Negre, and Laura Gonzalez, we see a welcome influx of striking colors in their projects. Martin Brudnizki's recent capsule with And Objects showcases beautiful emerald green and bubblegum pink shades — truly a feast for the eyes."

5. Not Ready for a Big Change? Start with Accent Colors

Jennifer Newman, a Furniture Designer and Founder of Jennifer Newman Studio, describes her approach as creating 'bold, adaptable designs that stand out.' Her Trestle table, priced at $3498.98/£2,655, exemplifies this philosophy with its chunky legs coated in a vibrant blue finish.

Jennifer notes that customer preferences for colorful dining tables have evolved over the past few years. "The pandemic has encouraged many to seek out bright, statement colors to uplift their homes and maintain a sense of optimism," she explains.

She suggests, "If you're hesitant to go all-out with color, consider designs like our Trestle table, which features colorful legs or pedestals that provide a splash of color without overwhelming the space."

6. Create a Statement with Sculptural Designs

One of the standout colorful dining table designs in recent years is the Smalto round table, priced at £4,176, created by Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby for Knoll at SCP. Its cylindrical legs and well-proportioned top have captured the attention of design enthusiasts.

Edward explains, "This project began with a focus on enamel, a new material for our studio. The process not only ensures durability but also produces vivid colors and a tactile quality."

He adds, "The strong, sculptural presence of the table, available in round and oblong shapes and five color options, is enhanced by the high gloss finish. The enamel is waterproof and resistant to fading from sunlight, making it a practical choice as well."

Paul Higgins, Head of Retail at SCP, emphasizes that bold color choices can completely transform a space. "Choosing a vibrant dining table could be the perfect starting point when planning your interior color scheme."
