Birdie began her design career at Percy Bass, a London-based interiors shop. Following that, she joined Imogen Taylor at the historic Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler in Mayfair. After countless buying trips and completing a decorative antiques course at the V&A Museum, she launched her own antiques business. Birdie focuses on sourcing Scandinavian homeware and creating her own unique designs, from block-printed fabrics to distinctive table lamps that complement both antiques and contemporary art.

1. Layer Your Linens

Using table linens can elevate any occasion and is one of my favorite ways to enhance a tablescape.

For a chic Valentine's dinner, start with matching placemats and napkins, paired with a coordinating tablecloth. If you prefer a more relaxed vibe, skip the tablecloth and use just napkins and placemats on a bare surface.

For an artisanal feel, opt for earthy hues and natural materials—rattan or woven reed placemats work perfectly for a rustic touch.

2. Combine Ceramics Creatively

Next, incorporate ceramics that complement each other. You can either stick to a uniform set for a polished look or mix various styles for a more vibrant, eclectic table.

When mixing designs, ensure there's balance—pair a dinner plate with a matching side plate or bowl. I enjoy using mismatched dinnerware in two or three colors, ensuring they align with my overall decor for a harmonious effect.

3. Incorporate Candlelight and Floral Arrangements

While I typically avoid Valentine's Day clichés, candles and flowers are exceptions. A collection of candlesticks paired with a large vase of seasonal blooms makes a perfect centerpiece for any occasion, especially February 14th.

Candles provide a warm, inviting glow—ideal for a romantic dinner or a cozy gathering with friends.

Finish your tablescape with an eye-catching floral arrangement in the center or several smaller vases among the candles. Choose less conventional flowers, like tulips and hydrangeas, and add greenery for depth and color.

For a personal touch, consider handwritten place cards or menus, especially if you're hosting a larger gathering!
