Tips for Booking Hotels: Mobile Discounts
Using mobile apps like Expedia enabled me to save 15-30% on hotel bookings thanks to their exclusive mobile rates. For instance, I secured a room at the
in Okayama, Japan, for a Saturday night about two weeks ahead for $96. However, just five days before my stay, I checked the same hotel on the
Smile Hotelwebsite, only to find it at nearly 30% off for $69.05! I booked it instantly and canceled the pricier option. Now, I’ve become somewhat obsessed with finding the best deals, often comparing rates while waiting in grocery store lines or at airport baggage claims.
Expedia mobile appJust a few days later, I was stranded in Japan due to a typhoon that disrupted my Taiwan trip. Since I enjoyed my stay at the Smile Hotel in Okayama, I decided to stick with the brand.
They provide clean, simple rooms in convenient areas, which I highly recommend for anyone visiting Japan soon.) I consistently checked mobile rates for hotels
Smile Hotelsand saved at least 15% each time, often finding rates lower than my earlier bookings! I secured rooms for $36-50/night after taxes in both Okayama and two Osaka locations through
Expediaand
Shin-Osakatrain stations. These rates were even lower than booking directly with the hotel, which is usually the best way to go. Plus, I managed to stay over the weekend at these low prices!
TennojiImportant note: Currently, the U.S. dollar is strong against the Japanese yen, making travel more affordable for Americans. Before discovering this tactic, I was spending around $80-100/night in larger cities or remote areas!
The best part? You still earn rewards when booking these mobile deals! The One Key rewards I accumulated from Expedia were effortlessly applied to my next stay, which was particularly helpful as I was booking hotels every couple of days while waiting to see how the typhoon would unfold!
I booked rooms at three
Smile Hotel locations in Japan for $36-$50 per night during my trip in September. This hotel brand features tidy rooms in prime locations, within walking distance of major train stations.
How Much Can You Save with Mobile Rates?
Usually, mobile hotel rates are 10-30% cheaper than their desktop counterparts. Booking.com mandates that participating hotels provide at least a 10% discount.
Why Are Mobile Rates More Affordable?
Desktop bookings incur higher costs due to advertising and keyword expenses, while mobile users convert to sales more easily. According to Booking.com, 50% of its traffic comes from mobile devices, with millennials making two-thirds of those bookings, leaving more reviews than other demographics. Some hotels even reserve lower rates specifically for mobile users based on these trends.
It’s wise to double-check desktop prices but do so without logging into the website. I once encountered a situation where the mobile app adjusted the price to match the desktop rate after I logged in.
If the “mobile” rate seems attractive and includes free cancellation, I often secure it right away and check the desktop site later to confirm. Keep in mind that just because an app labels a deal as “mobile only” doesn’t guarantee it’s better. Always do your research.
Expedia’s mobile rates appear with a green icon when using their app.
Which Travel App is Best for Hotels?
I typically compare several apps along with the hotel’s website. My favorites include Expedia, Booking.com, and Hotels.com. For my Kumano Kodo hotels, I relied on Booking.com, while for the major cities, I used Expedia. I even found a better deal on Hotels.com for my stay at the Iroha Grand Hotel in Nara, Japan. (In Tokyo, I loved this hotel!) I don’t favor any specific brand; I simply opt for the most affordable option with the best refund policy.
Loyalty programs and rewards play a crucial role too, as they can lead to even greater savings. Achieving Booking.com’s Genius Level 3 allowed me to automatically snag 20% off many bookings and even secured a room for $26 in Shingu, Japan!
