Jody Gerson is revolutionizing the music industry as the first female Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Publishing Group. Her mission focuses on enhancing diversity, particularly for women in this multi-billion dollar business.
Music permeates our lives, creating memorable soundtracks that evoke emotions and transport us through time. Yet, despite the prevalence of female artists like Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish, the industry has historically lacked female representation, especially in leadership roles.
Since taking the helm at UMPG in 2015, Gerson has significantly boosted company revenue beyond $2 billion. Her journey began in her father's New Jersey nightclub, where she was captivated by legendary performers such as Frank Sinatra and Diana Ross.
“Witnessing entertainers backstage shaped my understanding of their emotions and anxieties,” Gerson reflects. “It was an early lesson that prepared me for my role today.”
After earning her degree, Gerson pursued her passion in New York City, starting as an archivist at Chappell Music. It was here that she honed her ability to recognize hit songs.
“Everyone has a song that reminds them of a significant moment,” she states. “The magic lies in the melody and meaningful lyrics that resonate.”
As UMPG's leader, Gerson is dedicated to fostering inclusivity in the industry. In 2019, she co-founded “She Is The Music” with Alicia Keys, a nonprofit aimed at supporting women through songwriting camps and mentorship opportunities.
“Women have endured unacceptable behavior in this field for too long,” Gerson emphasizes. “Success comes when we uplift one another. Our goal is to create a community where women empower each other to seize opportunities.”
