Mayor Kate Gallego reflects on her experiences as a mother, the trials of divorce, and her impactful career as she looks ahead to the future. “You’re asking for a promotion while you’re in the middle of a big public failure,” she noted, recalling her 2018 sentiments during a turbulent period.

Overcoming Challenges

While serving on the Phoenix City Council, Gallego's life changed dramatically. She became pregnant after a long wait, only to face a divorce shortly after, compounded by her mother’s late-stage cancer diagnosis.

At the same time, the mayor of Phoenix announced his resignation, triggering a special election. Feeling overwhelmed as a new single mother, Gallego doubted her readiness to run for mayor of the nation’s fifth-largest city.

However, her supporters encouraged her to pursue the opportunity. “Once I got more sleep, I gained perspective, and a fantastic group of women urged me to step up. They said, ‘Don’t let motherhood and divorce hold you back,’” she shared.

Though she entered the race late, her dedication paid off. In 2019, she was elected as Phoenix’s mayor at the age of 37 and has since been re-elected twice.

Nurturing Leadership: Mentorship and Authenticity

Gallego’s career began under the mentorship of former Governor Janet Napolitano, who taught her the importance of preparation and perspective. “Her no-nonsense, data-driven approach inspired me as I campaigned,” Gallego stated.

Despite being naturally introverted, she learned to navigate social situations. “I prefer smaller gatherings, but I’ve developed strategies to connect with others in larger settings,” she admitted.

Driving Change: Personal Experiences Shaping Policy

Many of her initiatives stem from personal experiences, such as advocating for nursing spaces at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. One deeply personal effort involves enhancing access to advanced cancer care in her community.

During her mother’s fight against cancer, they received discouraging news about needing to travel to Houston for better treatment. “Hearing that was difficult, so I've been focused on ensuring fewer families have to face similar challenges,” she explained.

Gallego aims to transform Phoenix into a leader in medical innovation, partnering with Arizona State University to establish a new medical school and attracting nearly $2 billion in healthcare investments.

Looking Ahead: Phoenix's Future Under Gallego

One notable achievement was her involvement in attracting the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, which committed $165 billion to the city. This project not only bolsters the local economy but also strengthens national security by ensuring domestic chip production.

Gallego is also addressing the challenges posed by rising temperatures in Phoenix, advocating for more shaded public spaces and lighter street colors to mitigate heat.

In her final term, which lasts until April 2029, her name is gaining recognition on a national level. For now, her focus remains on Phoenix.

She states, “I believe I’m leaving the city in a better position for future generations, and that’s incredibly fulfilling.”
