Many of us share a common dislike for laundry day. It feels like an endless chore that we can't escape.

With modern washing machines, is separating clothes by color still necessary? On this National Laundry Day, April 15, experts say it's time to move on from that outdated practice.

While it won't magically complete your laundry, letting go of this rule will certainly speed up the process.

Reasons to Stop Separating Laundry by Color

If sorting laundry feels tedious, you're in luck. Stacee Parker, a laundry expert, claims that color separation is an old-fashioned rule that can be ignored.

"The constant anxiety laundry brings is what stresses people out. The aim is to stay ahead of it before it becomes overwhelming," she explains.

So what's the solution? "Stop worrying about sorting your clothes," she suggests. "Most modern detergents and cold-water cycles work well with mixed loads. Forget about the darks and lights—keep it simple!"

A recent survey of 600 Americans over 25 revealed that 54% find laundry one of their biggest stressors. Over 40% admitted that the thought of doing laundry makes them feel anxious or unhappy, while 21% said they'd prefer to never do laundry again, with only toilet cleaning getting slightly more votes.

It's such an unpopular task that more than half of survey participants would pay $10 weekly to skip laundry altogether.

Punteha van Terheyden, head of Solved, has been combining her laundry loads for years. She notes, "I only wash vibrant reds, blues, or purples separately during their first few washes. After that, they join the rest of my low-heat loads without issue—no accidental pink socks here!"

This National Laundry Day, consider skipping the sorting to reduce both time and stress. It's a foolproof method to simplify laundry, and it won't cost you a thing. Plus, it may lower your energy bills by allowing you to wash and dry in fewer loads.
