Q: I frequently shop at T.J. Maxx and Marshalls and often come across luxury skincare items at significantly lower prices. Am I wasting my money? I'm concerned they might be old stock.

A: We consulted Val Monroe, a former beauty director at O Magazine, for insight. Here’s her perspective:

“Instead of worrying about expiration dates, the reader should evaluate if these products are truly worth the extra cost compared to effective drugstore alternatives.

Many high-priced skincare items are not better due to superior ingredients; rather, the cost often stems from fancy packaging and marketing. Therefore, you're paying for those aspects, not necessarily for better results.”

Typically, these products aren’t expired; they may have been discontinued or are from previous seasons (yes, beauty has trends too). If they’re products you genuinely cherish, go for it! However, if you’re purchasing solely because they’re discounted, remember this principle: If it’s 50% off, it’s still 50% on.
