Feeling overwhelmed by finances is common, but it doesn't have to be this way. Here are five strategies to shift your perspective and reduce financial anxiety.
When my income increased, I didn't feel wealthy at all. I was unaware of my spending habits and my tendency to prioritize others over myself grew stronger. While I thought I was generous, it was a way to seek validation that I wasn't providing for myself.
During a time when my income dwindled, I realized that many of my so-called friends were no longer there for me. Yet, I discovered that I didn't need as much money to get by as I once believed. This prompted me to reconsider how I was managing my finances.
I used this challenging time to redefine my financial goals. Even amid hardship, I recognized the importance of changing my mindset. Here are five key steps that helped me transition from financial struggle to a healthier money mindset.
1. Acknowledge Your Current Situation
Much of the stress around money stems from resisting where you currently are. Accept that your situation, while not ideal, is temporary. Embrace the mindset that you can handle your current circumstances.
2. Let Go of Worry
Worrying is often compulsive and affects everyone, regardless of their financial status. Many believe they'll stop worrying once they have more money, but that's not the case. You must actively decide to break the cycle of worry before your finances improve. When I find myself worrying, I simply ask, “Can I take action on this right now?” If I can't, I move on. This approach has greatly reduced my financial anxiety.
3. Focus on the Here and Now
Staying present and honest with yourself is crucial during tough times. Ask, “Is it true that I can't afford food or my bills right now?” You might be surprised by the answer. If it's not true, remember that circumstances can change. Just because you can’t cover a bill now doesn’t mean you won’t be able to later.
4. Trust Yourself and the Future
In difficult moments, it's easy to blame yourself and feel like a failure. It's essential to treat yourself with kindness during these times. If you maintain the belief that your current situation is just temporary, you'll be better positioned to take the necessary steps to improve your financial outlook.
5. Seek Personal Growth
When my financial challenges felt overwhelming, I'd reflect on what I was learning from the experience. Typically, it involved recognizing my self-worth and fostering healthier connections with those around me.
Ready to stop the financial struggle? Start by gaining clarity. Identify what's unclear in your financial situation. You need to understand your current reality before you can make changes and move forward. Only then can you identify what causes you stress and how to respond differently.
