Kitchens need to be practical and functional spaces, but they can also exude warmth and character. As kitchen design evolves, many are embracing the idea of creating more inviting environments. One effective way to achieve this balance is through the incorporation of texture.

Interior designer Marie Flanigan focused on adding texture in her own home during her kitchen remodel. Here, she shares the importance of texture in kitchen design and the various methods she employed to achieve it.

"My goal with this kitchen was to craft a space filled with texture, where soft and hard finishes blend harmoniously, creating elegance and warmth," Marie explains. "Texture became the essence of the kitchen, making it feel both tactile and inviting. It's not just about functionality; it's about layering details thoughtfully."

"The kitchen's foundation is laid with bespoke Paloma limestone floors. These were selected for their natural, worn texture that adds character and grounding to the space. The French Quarter finish introduces a subtle roughness, contributing to a historical ambiance. This textured stone provides permanence and durability, essential qualities for a room that serves as the heart of our family's daily life."

"To complement the textured flooring, I chose Michelangelo Arebescado Dolomite countertops. This polished stone features soft veining, contributing a refined texture. Although the surface feels smooth, the natural variations in the veining create visual depth, contrasting beautifully with the rougher limestone below. Together, these elements create a harmonious interplay between rugged and smooth finishes, balancing the textures throughout the kitchen."

"The cabinetry is another critical element of texture in my kitchen. Made from stained white oak, the natural grain of the wood adds warmth and richness. Its smooth, matte finish contrasts with the cool, polished stone of the countertops. The earthy tones of the cabinetry complement the limestone flooring, creating a seamless flow of natural materials. This oak cabinetry connects the harder elements, like stone, with softer, more organic textures, enhancing both visual and tactile warmth."

"To introduce softer textures, I incorporated woven materials. The custom grassweave shades are one of my favorite features, adding an organic touch that softens the overall appearance of the room. Their slightly irregular weave introduces a layer of imperfection, creating a sense of comfort and ease. The way these shades filter light contributes to a welcoming atmosphere, casting a gentle glow that contrasts beautifully with the structured lines of the cabinetry and countertops."

"The walls are painted in Sherwin Williams Greek Villa, providing a calming backdrop that enhances the kitchen's layered textures without competing for attention. This creamy white shade creates a serene ambiance, allowing the natural wood and stone finishes to shine through."

"Natural elements play a significant role in adding texture to the kitchen. The light fixtures, including my own Reese pendants and Rigby sconces, combine brass with natural oak, introducing additional tactile interest. The oak in the sconces echoes the cabinetry, while the brass adds a sleek contrast that reflects the hardware and faucet choices."

"Even the smallest details, like the light bronze cabinet pulls, were selected with textural considerations in mind. Their handcrafted finish gives the room an artisanal touch, adding character and depth to the cabinetry. Together with the natural wood and soft kitchen lighting, these features enhance the room's overall textural narrative."

"While aesthetics were essential, practicality was never overlooked. The limestone flooring is durable and family-friendly, while the smooth dolomite countertops offer elegance without compromising maintenance ease. The woven shades and warm oak cabinetry create a cozy and inviting atmosphere, making the kitchen perfect for both quiet family dinners and entertaining guests."

"By thoughtfully layering textures through a combination of hard surfaces like stone and wood, along with softer elements such as fabric and lighting, the kitchen evolves into a luxurious yet lived-in space. Every surface and detail collaborates to create a tactile experience that embodies the heart of our home."
