A layoff doesn't signify failure; it's a chance to adapt to a changing landscape.
Experiencing a job loss can be shocking, especially after dedicating 20+ years to building your career. Laura Brown and Kristina O’Neill emphasize in their book, “All the Cool Girls Get Fired,” being let go is not a failure. Rather, it's an opportunity for growth.
Both women were once editors-in-chief of esteemed magazines and found themselves unexpectedly without jobs in their 40s. With no backup plans, they learned that losing a job doesn't mean the end; it can spark the beginning of a new, empowering chapter.
Here’s what they want every woman to hear.
A Layoff Doesn’t Indicate a Misstep
Jean Chatzky: What makes this topic so challenging to discuss?
Kristina O’Neill: We often lack role models who have faced layoffs. Many women haven’t seen leaders in prominent positions share their experiences. We aim to change the narrative and eliminate the stigma and shame surrounding this issue.
Laura Brown: Reaching that career milestone took immense effort and longer than expected. Losing that position can feel jarring. But we’ve worked hard for agency in our lives. Choosing shame only weighs you down further after experiencing a job loss.
Take Your Time Before Signing Anything
Jean Chatzky: When you are let go, you advise against signing any documents immediately. What should you do instead?
Kristina O’Neill: Often, companies rush employees to accept severance agreements. It’s essential to step back and assess the situation. Consulting a lawyer or a trusted advisor can be beneficial.
Negotiation isn't solely about money. Some may prioritize healthcare or retraining benefits. Others might negotiate to retain company equipment necessary for their work.
Laura Brown: Don’t hesitate to make requests; what do you have to lose? You’ve already been let go.
Establish Your Support Network
Jean Chatzky: You’re initiating a movement. What’s the vision behind The Cool Girl Network?
Laura Brown: Hearing it referred to as a movement is exhilarating. Since we shared, “All the cool girls get fired,” women have opened up about their experiences. Many say this is the first time they’ve spoken about being fired, shedding their burdens. We aim to transform this narrative.
Women deserve to feel empowered, even in the face of job loss. By owning our experiences, we can pave the way for a fulfilling personal and professional life.
