With countless cleaning products available today, it can be overwhelming to determine which ones are truly effective. Many options are laden with harmful chemicals, leading to a need for careful selection.

We consulted professional cleaners to find out which popular products they avoid and the alternatives they trust instead.

1. Disposable Cleaning Products

As we become more environmentally conscious, disposable cleaning items are being reconsidered. Ryan Knoll of Tidy Casa points out, 'There's no need to throw away dusting products. Opt for reusable microfiber alternatives that are easy to wash and usually cost the same as disposable options.'

2. Bleach

While bleach is a common cleaning agent, many professionals have reservations. Ryan states, 'Bleach is overrated. It might disinfect somewhat, but it's more likely to stain carpets than clean them.'

Brunson Sayes, a cleaning expert, concurs, noting, 'Bleach is harsh and can ruin fabrics. When I can avoid it, I prefer hydrogen peroxide or vinegar solutions for disinfecting, which are just as effective without the strong smell.'

Here are some recommended alternatives.

3. Floor Cleaners

For families with kids and pets, avoiding chemicals is crucial. Ryan asserts that most floor cleaners fail to deliver optimal results. 'A simple mix of water and a splash of vinegar works wonders on almost any floor,' he advises.

Instead of commercial cleaners, consider using a natural product like Method's cleaner for wooden floors.

Aunt Fannie's Multi-Surface Floor Cleaner, 32oz is a great choice, made from vinegar and essential oils, suitable for various surfaces.

4. Ammonia-Based Glass Cleaners

Brunson warns against ammonia-based glass cleaners. 'Those blue sprays may promise a streak-free shine, but they attract dirt over time,' he explains.

Daniel Brown, cleaning expert, adds, 'While they offer immediate shine, the results are often dull and uneven after drying.'

For a streak-free clean, use a homemade vinegar solution with microfiber cloths. 'Mix distilled water, white vinegar, and a drop of dish soap for a simple, effective cleaner,' Brunson suggests.

Mrs Meyer's Clean Day Snowdrop Holiday Dish Soap, 16 fl oz serves as a good alternative for cutting through grease on glass and other surfaces.

5. Foaming Products

Foaming products may appear fun, but Ryan warns they're often less effective than traditional cleaning methods. 'Regular dish soap with a sponge outperforms these foaming gimmicks,' he states.

We recommend Full Circle walnut scrubber sponges from Amazon, which receive excellent reviews.

6. Powdered Scouring Cleaners

Many powdered scouring cleaners can do more harm than good. Brunson explains, 'These gritty powders can scratch surfaces and leave a residue that's harder to clean than the mess itself.'

Instead, a paste made of baking soda and water applied with a soft cloth yields excellent results without damage.

Consider using Walmart's Mainstays microfiber dishcloths for gentle cleaning.

Arm & Hammer Pure Baking Soda, 1lb is a versatile powder for baking and cleaning, gentle enough for all surfaces.

7. Scented Multi-Surface Sprays

While some multi-purpose cleaners are effective, many contain overpowering synthetic fragrances. Brunson notes, 'Those sprays that promise fresh scents often mask harmful chemicals. I prefer unscented or naturally scented products that focus on cleaning efficiency.'

To enhance your space's aroma post-cleaning, consider essential oil diffusers and natural deodorizers like lavender or citrus.
