You may not be familiar with the Dutch Method, but if you've experienced spring in the Netherlands, you might have noticed the bright mornings and the absence of drawn curtains and blinds.

While many of us instinctively block out natural light while sleeping, the Dutch Method embraces it, utilizing morning light to gently rouse the body. This approach offers straightforward yet impactful benefits: a balanced circadian rhythm, improved sleep quality, and increased energy during the day.

Experts share why this method is a springtime secret for better sleep and how you can implement it.

Understanding the Dutch Method for Better Sleep

Blinds2go collaborated with Maryanne Taylor, Sleep Consultant at The Sleep Works, to shed light on this technique. According to Maryanne, natural light serves as a potent tool to synchronize your body clock, affecting sleep patterns, mood, and energy levels.

She notes, 'Keeping your curtains and blinds open in the morning can significantly enhance sleep quality as exposure to morning light solidifies the circadian rhythm, signaling the brain to wake up. Sunlight strengthens our internal clock, making us feel more alert.'

This has a ripple effect throughout the day, contributing to increased sleep pressure by nighttime, essential for both falling and staying asleep.

Rachel Wood, PhD, a Design Psychology researcher, adds, 'Embracing the Dutch practice can yield multiple advantages. Open curtains not only invite more light but also foster a sense of community, combating feelings of isolation, which is increasingly important today.'

My Experience with the Dutch Method

As a Sleep Editor, I can attest to the effectiveness of this method. It's become a crucial element of my spring sleep routine.

During the spring months, when I need to rise by 7 am for work, I keep my curtains wide open overnight, allowing natural light to wake me gently, without the harshness of an alarm.

When weather permits, I crack my window to let in fresh air, helping to maintain a comfortable sleep environment. This combination has enriched my sleep, made waking easier, and boosted my energy levels.

Livvi DiCicco, a certified sleep coach at Sleepopolis, states, 'Several studies indicate that morning sunlight before 10 am can enhance sleep quality. It's logical: Being active early in the day helps you feel tired by evening.'

'Sunlight also stimulates serotonin production, which can elevate your mood in the mornings.'

While this strategy isn't a direct sleep solution, it helps your body adjust to the spring light and shifting daylight hours, facilitating a seamless transition into sleep at night.

Maryanne emphasizes, 'When we spring forward, our alarms go off at what seems like an hour earlier. Longer evenings can delay melatonin release, which might upset sleep patterns and leave people feeling out of sync.'

'Dimming lights inside about an hour before bedtime signals your brain that the day is ending, allowing melatonin levels to rise.'

Implementing the Dutch Method

A pale green bedroom space with sage panelled walls and a double bed with a green pattern, surrounded by patterned bedside tables and lamps. The floor is light wood, featuring a large patterned rug. In the background, two arched windows with white and green floral-patterned curtains allow natural light to flood the room.

It's incredibly simple to experience the advantages of the Dutch Method at home. Just open your bedroom window treatments before bedtime to let natural light flood your space in the morning.

Maryanne suggests, 'In the morning, open your curtains and blinds right away. Step outside briefly if you can. Morning light resets your internal clock, decreasing melatonin and boosting cortisol, the hormone that energizes us.'

If this method wakes you up too early, don't abandon it. Instead, just open your curtains once you wake up.

'Many people choose blackout curtains to prevent waking too early, as nighttime light can impact melatonin levels. However, failing to open them before starting your day can be counterproductive,' Livvi explains. 'After waking, it's crucial to get sunlight within 30 minutes. This not only provides essential Vitamin D but also signals to your body that the day has begun.'

If sleeping with your curtains drawn isn't an option, or if you need to rise before daybreak, consider a sunrise alarm to mimic these benefits.

The Lumie Bodyclock Rise 100, available on Amazon, is a popular choice, offering smart sleep technology. But remember, nothing beats the free benefits of natural light.

This method isn't just for spring and summer. Utilizing morning light, even in the fall and winter, can brighten your home and help you avoid seasonal sleep issues that lead to fatigue.

Shopping Recommendations

While you don't need to purchase anything to adopt the Dutch Method, here are a few suggestions to support deeper, more restorative sleep as spring arrives.

As a Sleep Editor, I change my bedding seasonally, opting for lighter linens and breezy sheets to help regulate my body temperature for sleep. Along with that, a calming pillow spray is a must as the weather warms.
