Conquering loneliness, enjoying free ice cream, and establishing daily habits can lead to success.
This Week In Your Wallet: The Optimism Edition
Hello, readers!
While you're here for finance updates rather than global events, I understand the need for positivity. This week, amidst troubling headlines, I sought uplifting financial news—and I’m pleased to share it was abundant. Let’s explore!
Overcoming Loneliness Through Connection
As discussed in a recent podcast episode featuring Adam Smiley Poswolsky, a workplace expert and author, loneliness affects many Americans. Alarmingly, Cigna reports that 70% of Millennials and 80% of Gen Z feel isolated, impacting both mental and physical wellness. Adam shared insightful strategies to foster friendships and enrich our lives, responding to questions from our community. I found our conversation inspiring, and I think you will too.
Marissa Meizz, 23, took a unique approach after being left out of a birthday celebration. A stranger on TikTok alerted her to the situation, leading her to share her experience online. The result? Thousands of new friends! In response to this support, she created the No More Lonely Friends community, organizing meet-ups across the nation.
Speaking of gatherings, my husband and I ventured out in Center City Philly last Friday and stumbled upon a stunning scene. Initially mistaking a small group in white for a wedding, we soon realized it was Diner en Blanc, an annual event since 1988 where attendees meet at a secret spot, bringing their own meals and tables—all while dressed in white. With free ice cream from Van Leeuwen available, it was a delightful sight. Next year, we’re definitely joining!
Ice Cream Delight
You might wonder why Van Leeuwen is distributing ice cream for free. The ice cream market, valued at $7 billion as of 2020, is highly competitive. Small businesses like Jennifer Dundas' Blue Marble shops are gaining recognition. I can’t wait to try the Banana Cream Pie from her lineup. And, sports enthusiasts, there’s exciting news for you!
Make Your Bed for a Fresh Start
To enhance productivity, creating a conducive space is crucial, especially with remote work becoming the norm. Raisa Brunner notes that many prefer not to return to traditional offices. Personally, I enjoy the buzz of a workplace. However, as we work from home, Satish Malhotra, CEO of Container Store, suggests tips to optimize our environments. His recommendations include cord organizers and lazy susans, but he particularly urges making your bed. “Seeing a made bed gives you an immediate sense of achievement. My wife and I started this years ago, and it’s liberating!”
Finding Liberation in Finance
A note from Laura McLoughlin, a participant in our 8-week FinanceFixx coaching program, resonates with me. She decided to continue with FixxPlus after the course ended, and her progress is inspiring.
Laura shared: “I’m entering this new phase with valuable insights from your guidance. I’m exploring personal finance in a fresh way, feeling confident, curious, accountable, and aware. What more could I ask for?”
Thanks for sharing, Laura! We’re excited to see what lies ahead for you.
