Freelancing has become a viable option for many in today's job market. If you're ready to embark on this path, here’s how to begin.
The recent pandemic has reshaped the work environment for countless professionals, emphasizing the shift to remote work.
This year's Future Workforce Report reveals a notable trend: “Hiring managers are increasingly relying on independent talent due to evolving business needs,” according to Nancy Van Brunt, senior director of talent success at Upwork.
The report highlights that 45% of hiring managers anticipate hiring freezes for new full-time positions, whereas 73% plan to either sustain or increase their freelance hiring. Furthermore, nearly half of these managers express a stronger inclination to engage independent talent post-pandemic.
Moreover, the data indicates that the proportion of independent workers earning a full-time living through freelancing has risen by 8% since 2019, now at 36%. Interestingly, many who transitioned to freelancing reported higher earnings: 75% of those who left traditional jobs claim they earn the same or more than before.
“Economic downturns often lead individuals to freelancing for financial stability or as a response to job loss,” states Van Brunt. “Unlike previous downturns, remote work options during COVID-19 have been crucial, allowing many to explore freelancing who previously couldn’t.”
Freelancing Surge Amid Economic Uncertainty
Since March, Van Brunt notes a spike in freelancer registrations, new clients, and job listings on Upwork.
If you’ve faced job loss or furlough, freelancing can provide essential income. For those enduring a lengthy job search, freelance work serves as a helpful interim solution. Additionally, freelancing can pave the way to future opportunities if you establish a strong rapport with clients.
“During times of economic uncertainty, interest in freelancing typically rises,” shares Brie Reynolds, career development manager at FlexJobs. Companies often prefer freelancers in such climates to avoid long-term commitments. FlexJobs reports a significant 50% increase in traffic this year compared to last.
Kickstarting Your Freelancing Journey
If you’re contemplating a freelance career, consider these essential tips to help you get started.
Define Your Freelance Services
While you may possess various skills, it’s best to focus on one or two areas where you excel. This targeted approach simplifies the search for specific gigs requiring your expertise.
“Clients prefer specialists over generalists,” Van Brunt emphasizes, whether it’s e-commerce, graphic design, or copywriting.
Promote Yourself Effectively
A strong resume is crucial for landing lucrative freelance engagements, alongside compelling cover letters. You don't need an exhaustive resume but should clearly convey your skills through relevant experiences and testimonials, suggests Van Brunt.
While a personal website may not be necessary for all fields, a polished LinkedIn profile or a presence on platforms like Upwork or FlexJobs can effectively showcase your work. Compiling a document with links to impactful case studies can also enhance your portfolio.
Building your brand can include writing articles, participating in networking events, and sharing industry-related content on social media.
Leverage Your Existing Network
If you're struggling to find clients, tap into your network. Don't hesitate to reach out to former employers or colleagues for potential project opportunities.
For outreach, identify a company you admire, research their work, and determine the right contact person for your services. Your letter should clearly outline how you can contribute to their success.
Initially, be open to smaller projects. A brief job can lead to a lasting relationship with a client, often starting with a test assignment to gauge fit for future work.
Embrace the Excitement
Launching your freelance career can be thrilling. Remember, you'll need to manage contracts, invoicing, and client communication. Expect to focus on business development, branding, pricing, and marketing strategy. You’re capable of handling it all!
