From feeling lost to discovering her passion, Gretchen Rubin exemplifies the power of intuition.
Bestselling author and happiness advocate Gretchen Rubin shared her transformative journey with Karen Finerman on the How She Does It podcast, revealing how she shifted from Yale Law School and a Supreme Court clerkship to becoming a leading voice on happiness, habits, and personal development. Here’s her story.
From Law School to New Beginnings
“I attended law school for all the wrong reasons,” Gretchen admits. While clerking for Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, she began to question her life choices.
“I sensed I was off course, feeling more like a spectator than a participant.”
Growing up, she lacked examples of the kind of writer she aspired to be. “I thought writing was limited to novels, plays, poetry, journalism, or academia, and none of those appealed to me, leaving me unsure of my writing path.”
Trusting Her Instincts and Making a Change
What excited Gretchen was research, a skill she refined in law school. While clerking, she became fascinated by themes like power, wealth, and fame. She decided, “I’d prefer to fail as a writer than succeed as a lawyer. It’s time to take the leap.”
She purchased a book titled How to Write and Sell a Nonfiction Book Proposal, meticulously followed its guidance, and began her journey of reinvention.
The Path to Success
It took Gretchen Rubin a decade and four books to create the work that transformed her life: The Happiness Project. This book, which started as a personal exploration to enhance her joy, struck a chord with many readers.
The 2009 bestseller not only launched her writing career but also established a brand that includes a podcast, newsletter, and various courses. Despite being labeled an “overnight sensation,” Gretchen clarified, “I spent ten years preparing for this moment. Many aren’t aware of my earlier publications.”
Inspiring Others
Currently, Gretchen Rubin continues to help people pursue greater happiness and self-awareness through her books, her podcast Happier, and her expanding body of work. She is more than just a writer; she’s a mentor for individuals seeking to live joyfully and with purpose.
“They say the right teacher appears when the student is ready, but everyone has their unique teacher,” she reflects.
For countless readers and listeners, Gretchen Rubin is that guiding presence.
