As the cold weather sets in, most of us prioritize sealing windows and doors. However, a commonly overlooked area that can waste your energy is your electrical outlets.

These small openings are considered 'practically holes in your walls' by heating experts. Fortunately, they can be easily and affordably draft-proofed, according to professionals.

Here's how the experts suggest you can enhance your home's comfort in under five minutes.

Insulating Your Outlets

Understanding where and how to insulate to maintain warmth often requires thinking creatively.

Dan Cronen, an HVAC specialist, notes, 'An outlet on an exterior wall is essentially a gap in the wall. While it's covered, it usually isn't sealed. Your heated or cooled air escapes through these openings all year round, wasting money.'

'Newer constructions are likely sealed well, but older homes with poor insulation can lose more heat through these gaps,' he adds.

To improve heating efficiency and reduce energy bills, Dan recommends using pre-cut insulating foam pads. These are available at major retail stores, like the Frost King Weatherstrip Plates at Lowe's or the MD Building Products Outlet Foam Sealers at The Home Depot.

Only the outlets on exterior walls need this treatment.

Quick Fix in Five Minutes

To insulate, unscrew the cover plate, place the gasket behind it, and reattach the plate. It's a simple upgrade that pays off immediately,' Dan advises. It's best to switch off the power at the main breaker first for safety. A multi-head screwdriver set from Walmart can assist with this task.

For added sealing, Jon Gilbertson, an HVAC expert, suggests applying a silicone bead around the outlet box to prevent drafts from seeping in.

You can purchase high-quality GE silicone at Walmart. Jon advises, 'Choose foam gaskets that fit your outlet type to ensure a proper seal: single, double, or two-gang. Foam gaskets that are around 3mm thick block drafts much more effectively than thinner ones.'

For the outlets themselves, Dan recommends child-proof outlet covers from Walmart. 'These help prevent accidents while also sealing drafts from the prong holes.'

If your home has newer outlets or you install tamper-proof varieties, they automatically close when not in use, eliminating the need for additional covers.
