My air fryer ranks as one of my top kitchen appliances, thanks to its convenience and versatility. However, frequent use leads to stubborn grease and food residue that can be tough to remove.

After realizing that a popular method of heating soapy water in my air fryer could damage the appliance or even start a fire, I sought a safer cleaning solution that would keep my air fryer looking like new.

Fortunately, one of my go-to household cleaning tricks worked perfectly for my air fryer: cleaning with vinegar.

Even the top air fryers require regular cleaning to avoid buildup. I sometimes neglected deep cleaning after late-night meals, leading to thick grease stains that were tough to eliminate without harsh scrubs. If you've ever thought, 'I'll clean it in the morning,' you know the struggle!

Neglecting proper air fryer cleaning is a common mistake I've made.

For assistance, I turned to my trusty vinegar-water mix. Although it's crucial to know what not to clean with vinegar, its acidic nature effectively combats grease buildup in the kitchen.

To prepare my cleaning solution, I combine one cup of white vinegar with one cup of warm water in a spray bottle. Using the mixture while it's still warm allows it to dissolve grease more effectively. I often add a teaspoon or two of lemon juice for a fresher scent.

I spray the solution on the greasy areas and let it sit for a few minutes before gently scrubbing with a soft pad or sponge, then rinsing.

If my air fryer needs extra attention, I soak the basket in the solution for about an hour. Avoid soaking it overnight; the cooling water can solidify grime, making it harder to clean.

For the heating elements, I spray the solution on a cloth instead of directly on the components to prevent potential damage to my appliance.

After using the solution, I wipe down my air fryer with clean water and sometimes dish soap to remove any vinegar residue. While vinegar is safe for food, it may affect the taste of some dishes, which is fine for fries but not ideal for everything!

A few precautions: vinegar's acidity can wear down rubber parts over time if used undiluted. Also, not following your manufacturer's cleaning instructions could void any warranty. However, I've found that diluted vinegar hasn't harmed my air fryer, especially since I use it only when grease accumulates.

Properly cleaning your air fryer can help maintain its efficiency, ultimately lowering operating costs.

Is it safe to use dish soap and water in your air fryer?

It's fine to use warm soapy water to clean your air fryer, but don't turn it on while water is inside. Despite online advice suggesting this as an easy cleaning method, air fryers aren't designed to hold significant amounts of liquid, and water can get sucked into the fan, leading to a short circuit.

A short circuit can result in permanent damage or even fire hazards. When cleaning with warm soapy water, allow parts to soak while unplugged or use a non-abrasive scrubber for wiping down the appliance.
