AI is reshaping the job market in ways many are just beginning to understand.
Conversations about the potential benefits and drawbacks of AI in the workplace are everywhere. Can I utilize AI tools to enhance my resume? Where should we draw the line? And, more concerning — is my job at risk?
According to leading Human Resource Officers from Fortune 500 companies, AI may indeed threaten your current job. Gallup reports that 72% of these executives predict AI will replace roles in their organizations within the next three years.
Women are particularly vulnerable, as they are projected to be 1.5 times more likely than men to seek new employment by 2030 due to AI advancements. A recent study by McKinsey highlights that sectors heavily influenced by AI, such as food service, customer support, and administrative roles, predominantly employ women. These jobs are often lower-paid, making them prime targets for AI replacement. So, how do we stay proactive?
Expert Hilke Schellmann, author of The Algorithm: How AI Decides Who Gets Hired, Monitored, Promoted, and Fired and Why We Need to Fight Back Now, offers practical advice.
MAKE YOUR RESUME MACHINE READABLE
First, ensure your resume is easy for machines to read. “We used to encourage creative resumes with fancy layouts. Machines can’t interpret that, and it may even misread your information,” Schellmann explains. A machine-readable resume should be concise, use straightforward sentences, include quantitative data, and clearly list all relevant skills.
Schellmann suggests testing your resume with Jobscan, a tool designed to optimize resumes for applicant tracking systems. Aim for a 60-80% alignment with job descriptions. However, achieving 100% overlap may lead to rejection, as machines might think you copied the job listing,” she advises.
PREPARE FOR ONE-WAY INTERVIEWS
Another trend is the rise of one-way interviews, where candidates respond to pre-recorded questions. Schellmann mentions working with HireVue, which facilitates around 100,000 of these video interviews daily. The key is to craft a compelling narrative in your responses; avoid short, vague answers.
“Short responses can hinder the algorithm's ability to assess your potential for success,” she cautions. Provide examples and be engaging. Remember, these platforms often analyze facial expressions, so maintaining a positive demeanor is essential, similar to an in-person interview.
SHOULD YOU WORRY ABOUT AI TAKING YOUR JOB?
So, is your job at risk? Schellmann advises against panic.
While some positions may vanish, it's crucial to focus on leveraging AI to enhance your productivity in your current role.
“Some employees may be replaced by those who adapt to using AI effectively,” she states. Exploring AI tools can reveal their potential benefits for you and your company.
Schellmann views AI as a transformative force. When utilized thoughtfully, it can be a significant asset for job seekers and those wishing to advance in their careers.
