Graduating from Princeton, Boorstin landed a reporting role at FORTUNE without any economics background. She initially intended to stay only a year before pursuing graduate studies but found herself captivated by journalism.
“Feeling insecure about my lack of study in this area pushed me to read extensively,” she recalled. This determination impressed her editors, who guided her in analyzing complex financial reports.
“Joining FORTUNE in 2000, I was the last hire before the market crash,” Boorstin recounted. In her early twenties, she often interviewed analysts and CEOs grappling with declining stock values.
“I faced challenges asking tough questions as a young woman, so I opted for boxy blazers and quirky glasses to earn respect,” she noted.
Her first television appearance came unexpectedly when she was invited to discuss her article on CNN. With encouragement from her boss, Boorstin showcased her expertise and soon became a regular contributor, eventually leading to a full-time position at CNBC.

Guidance for a Transforming Landscape
This year’s Disruptor 50 list highlights primarily AI-focused companies, a trend Boorstin finds unsurprising.
“AI is affecting every industry,” she states, urging individuals to explore AI tools like Perplexity, Claude, or ChatGPT.
“It's crucial for everyone to experiment with these technologies. While some may feel apprehensive, I remain optimistic,” she said.
“Adaptation is key. While some jobs may vanish, new opportunities will arise,” Boorstin believes.
She encourages young professionals to embrace flexibility in their careers, noting that unexpected paths can lead to fulfilling outcomes, just as she experienced.
“You won’t know what you enjoy until you try it. The job landscape will evolve, so be open to new experiences,” she advises.
