How can you truly embrace a wealthy lifestyle while planning for retirement and enjoying today? Ramit Sethi shares his perspective.

Personal finance is often described as being more about personal values than mere numbers. It's essential to establish financial guidelines that resonate with your life. Consider what truly matters to you: Do you aspire to grow your family? What are your retirement dreams? To explore how to create your personalized financial path, we consulted Ramit Sethi, author of the popular book, I Will Teach You to Be Rich, and host of a new Netflix series, How to Get Rich. Sethi assists individuals nationwide in achieving their richest lives, sharing his top 10 money rules in his book.

Defining Wealth

Sethi notes that the concept of being “wealthy” can vary significantly. Many envision it as luxury cars and lavish dinners, yet for others, it might mean picking their kids up from school each day. For some, early retirement is the goal, while for others, it’s taking a memorable family vacation each year. “That’s their wealthy life,” Sethi emphasizes.

When he asks individuals what wealth means to them, he often hears, I want to do what I want, when I want. However, he challenges this by asking, “What do you want to do?” We often spend years working hard and worrying about expenses without contemplating the ultimate purpose of it all. What does your vision of wealth truly entail?

Be Clear and Detailed

A typical response to Sethi’s inquiries is “freedom,” but he stresses this lacks clarity. Challenge yourself to paint a vivid picture of your goals. For instance: “My spouse and I want to enjoy a three-week trip to Italy, sipping wine and taking in the views of the Colosseum, perhaps with our parents or kids.” This is how you start crafting a rich life vision.

It doesn’t have to involve extravagant trips. Sethi shares that after relocating, he and his wife missed their time in New York. Now, they take Fridays off to rediscover their favorite spots in the city. “We visit our beloved places,” he explains, noting that a fulfilling life can include something as simple as enjoying a slice of pizza at a neighborhood favorite.

Embrace Your Aspirations

People often hesitate to share their visions of wealth due to fear of judgment, resulting in them downplaying their dreams. For instance, someone may express a desire for a beach house but say, “It could just be a small shack.”

Sethi encourages them to think bigger, exclaiming, “Why downgrade your dream to a dilapidated shack? Stop minimizing your vision!” It’s crucial to dream without limits. Once you’ve envisioned your ideal life without constraints, you can strategize on how to achieve it.

Indulging Is Essential

Many struggle with the idea that their desires might be seen as “frivolous.” If you yearn for a luxury handbag or expensive theater tickets, recognize that it’s perfectly acceptable to treat yourself. Once foundational goals (like retirement savings) are met, enjoying life is not a luxury; it’s a necessity.

Sethi advises, “Spend lavishly on what you cherish, while being frugal on what you don’t value.” Every day presents an opportunity to redefine and reshape what your “wealthy life” truly means.
