Designing a bedroom transcends mere aesthetics; it's about creating a space that promotes restful sleep. So, how can you create a bedroom that functions beautifully while ensuring comfort? Ferris Rafauli, a celebrated interior designer from Ontario, has some valuable insights.

In collaboration with Hästens, a renowned Swedish mattress brand, Ferris recently discussed how to craft a bedroom focused on performance. He introduced the newly enhanced Grand Vividus and drēmər® 'sleep instruments', emphasizing how these pieces enhance sleep quality and overall performance. Our conversation highlighted that the best bedrooms are designed by removing excess, not adding more.

As we talked, it became clear that prioritizing performance is the next step in luxury home design.

Ferris remarked: 'In today's fast-paced world, people often invest in tangible items and overlook the importance of performance. True performance hinges on how well you rest. A good night's sleep leads to clarity of thought, improved performance, and a confident approach to life's challenges.' Choosing the right mattress is just the beginning.

He continued, 'Everything in your environment influences your motivation. People curate beautiful spaces and drive impressive cars to evoke certain feelings that fuel their drive.'

This quest for excellence has made Ferris's designs for Hästens the choice of high-performing individuals like Wayne Gretzky. He explained this connection, noting: 'For individuals like Wayne and Janet Gretzky, performance and recovery are paramount. They inherently recognize that what happens off the ice is as vital as on it.' Investing in a quality mattress is essential for long-term health and performance.

Ferris elaborated: 'When sleep standards are uncompromising, Hästens becomes a natural fit. It embodies the same discipline and craftsmanship they've applied throughout their lives. Ultimately, it's about the bed. That's where recovery occurs, where the mind resets, and how you begin each day. Everything can excel at the highest level, but only one aspect truly transforms you: the bed.'

According to Ferris, the first step in designing a bedroom is to cultivate tranquility.

He stated: 'In busy areas, artwork and vibrant designs can energize a space. However, the bedroom should be a sanctuary for relaxation and simplicity.'

He added: 'While aesthetics matter, the primary focus must be on sleep and recharging for the day ahead. My role was to celebrate the art of sleep and focus attention back on the bed. I often recommend minimizing elements that can overwhelm the bedroom, maintaining it as a space for rest rather than excitement.'

He emphasized: 'Understanding when to remove elements is crucial. If everything demands attention, nothing truly stands out.'

He concluded: 'This is a space to simplify and allow essential pieces like the bed, nightstands, and linens to draw you in. Design can still be celebrated while keeping other elements understated, emphasizing sleep and rejuvenation.'

Ferris's design approach is tailored to each client's needs. Performance and functionality guide the aesthetic choices. 'Every client's needs differ based on their lifestyle and preferences, but one universal truth remains: everyone sleeps.'

'At some point, the design must transition into a space for relaxation,' he explained. 'A bedroom may have luxurious amenities, but I intentionally simplify color tones and finishes so that when you enter, it feels distinctly like a bedroom, not a living room.'

Creating a distinct ambiance is equally vital. Ferris noted: 'This is guided not just by the client but by our design principles, which include balancing soft and strong elements for a calming experience. Lighting plays a significant role in this unwinding process.'

Though many might label Ferris's minimalist design approach as 'quiet luxury', he disagrees.

He stated: 'Luxury is often a term used in marketing. I don't consider my work luxury. True luxury is defined by health and substance—elements that can't be bought.'
