Embrace the joy of shopping locally this Small Business Saturday! Discover unique gifts, enjoy local culture, and uplift your community! Here’s your guide to #shoplocal.

Scheduled for Nov. 30, Small Business Saturday falls between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. While it might seem like a marketing ploy, this initiative, started by American Express a decade ago, has a deeper purpose.

According to Carol R. Wilkerson, Press Director of the U.S. Small Business Administration, the essence of Small Business Saturday is awareness. “It’s about supporting local businesses that significantly contribute to their communities,” she explains.

The True Benefits of #shopsmall

If you’re hunting for the best deals, Black Friday is your day for appliances and tech, while Cyber Monday shines for clothing and beauty products. (Check out our Black Friday tips.)

However, the advantages of shopping locally on Small Business Saturday are distinct.

A study from Michigan State University reveals that for every $100 spent at a large retailer, about $43 stays in the local community. In contrast, spending the same amount at a small business keeps approximately $73 in the local economy.

Additionally, supporting local businesses fosters a sense of community and helps decrease the environmental impact from deliveries.

Enhancing Your #shoplocal Adventure

For small retailers, this day is a chance to create memorable experiences for customers, as noted by Amy Rutherford, owner of two shops in Alexandria, Va. — Red Barn Mercantile and Penny Post.

“It’s an opportunity to escape the mall chaos and build relationships,” Rutherford states. “We welcome customers warmly, showing our gratitude for their support over the years.” This year’s special treatment at the local stores includes complimentary drinks, popcorn tastings, craft workshops, activities for kids, trunk shows, and pop-up shops featuring local artisans.

Check your local Chamber of Commerce website, the American Express community database, and Etsy Local for events and independent retailers nearby. Make the most of your day with these tips:

Enjoy the hunt: The variety in small business offerings is vast, from boutiques to eateries. Seek out unique gifts with local significance crafted by regional artisans.

Start early: Small businesses also join the Black Friday fun, often providing incentives like free gifts and significant discounts for early shoppers.

Find free parking: Many retail areas waive parking fees for the weekend, allowing you to shop freely without meter concerns.

Explore hidden gems: Discover lesser-known stores during this season. A scavenger hunt created by over 20 local shopkeepers highlights special deals in the historic Old Town area. Collect stamps from participating shops for a chance to win $1,000 in gift certificates and a stay at a boutique hotel. Many neighborhoods may have similar activities, so inquire at your favorite shops!

Dine locally: While shopping, take a breather at a local eatery to recharge, and consider picking up a gift certificate.

Look online too: Not all small businesses have physical stores. Seek out local online retailers participating in Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday sales.

This holiday season, shop local to spread joy to your community, small business owners, and everyone on your gift list.
