As a cookware tester, I found myself with around 30 pans cluttering my kitchen. Moving into a compact city apartment pushed me to streamline my collection, keeping only the most versatile and high-performing pieces for an organized space.

When I received a stackable set from Staub just before my move, I was excited. If you're searching for the best cookware for tight spaces, this clever design is a significant win. It combines low-stick, cast-iron, non-toxic materials (I opted for the frying pan, braiser, and cocotte) with a nesting design that conserves cupboard space without sacrificing functionality.

I tested the three-piece Staub Stackable Set with everything from delicate omelettes to chicken casseroles. Aside from my favorite extra-large non-stick wok for weekly stir-fries, it's now the only cookware I foresee using in the near future.

The Staub Stackable Set is specifically created for kitchens where every inch counts. The three-piece set includes a 24 cm cocotte, sauté pan, and frying pan – and you can also choose to add a griddle for the four-piece set.

Each piece nests perfectly, accompanied by a single universal lid that fits all. Protective bumpers prevent scratches, ensuring the pans stack securely, keeping your cupboards and countertops organized. The glossy, majolique exterior enhances its appeal, making it suitable for display in an open kitchen cabinet.

Crafted in France from robust, enamelled cast iron, these cookware items feel designed to endure a lifetime (not just a brief stay in a small flat!). The best cast iron cookware is renowned for its heat distribution and retention, perfect for searing, browning, and slow-cooked meals.

Cooking Performance

My cooking routine includes frequent breakfasts of fried eggs and family dinners such as pastas, risottos, and casseroles. This set handles all my go-to recipes exceptionally well.

Starting with the frying pan: it's compact yet perfectly sized for two to three servings and tackled everything I prepared: fried eggs, French omelettes, sautéed veggies, all cooked thoroughly without sticking or staining. It competes well with the best non-stick fry pans; I appreciated that I could use it without worrying about chipping or flaking coatings.

The sauté pan is slightly deeper, making it ideal for sauces, risottos, and pastas. I noticed the cast iron's heat retention contributes to consistent cooking, ensuring sauces and braises simmer evenly throughout.

I prepared my mother's signature chicken casserole, and everything turned out perfectly cooked – rich flavors, tender chicken, and crispy rice edges. I quickly sautéed garlic prawns in the frying pan and added them on top as well. The slightly textured enamel surface gives food a lovely golden finish on proteins.

What I appreciate most is the universal lid that fits every pan in the set. Staub lids are famous for their interior spikes, which return condensation back onto the food, keeping stews, casseroles, and braises moist instead of dry.

I also enjoyed using the large cocotte, which transitions effortlessly from stovetop to oven, making it incredibly versatile and space-efficient. This design is also highlighted in my guide to the best Dutch ovens. One note for stir-fry enthusiasts: none of the pans are spacious enough for tossing a proper stir-fry. If that's a staple in your weekly meals, you might want a separate wok (I personally recommend the HexClad).

Cleaning & Care

Storage efficiency is crucial with this stackable set. They nest conveniently and neatly, resembling Russian dolls, so you utilize space effectively while keeping your cupboards organized.

If you prefer dishwasher-safe cookware, these are best hand-washed, but they only need a quick rinse to clean. I used soapy water and a gentle sponge; avoid anything too abrasive. The durable black enamel interior is thick and non-staining, but the brand still recommends using wooden or silicone utensils (personally, I use the Supoon from Amazon for almost everything).

I left the pans out to dry, only to realize you should dry cast iron cookware to avoid rust. Fortunately, Staub employs a triple-layer enamel, eliminating the need to season your pans with oil. For more guidance, we have a comprehensive guide on cleaning and caring for various cookware types.

How It Stacks Up Against Others

There aren't many alternatives like Staub's stackable set available, apart from Joseph Joseph's non-stick nesting pans from Amazon. Our Living editor previously reviewed these in November; she chose them for similar reasons as I did, due to moving into a smaller apartment.

Personally, I favor Staub's stackable cast iron – it feels like a timeless heirloom set, crafted for use, appreciation, and passing down over generations. While the price is slightly elevated, these will accompany you throughout life (unlike non-stick coatings, which tend to only last 2-3 years).

I also compared Staub to Le Creuset. In the above image, you'll see the Dutch oven my mother has owned for three decades. I prefer Staub for its dark, textured enamel (easier to maintain and offers better textures on meats). Additionally, you can see that the three stacked pans don't exceed the height of one Le Creuset Dutch oven, which is convenient.

Is It Worth the Purchase?

If you're living in a compact kitchen, appreciate clutter-free environments, or simply love beautifully crafted cookware, the Staub Stackable Set is hard to surpass. It's versatile, dependable, and space-efficient – exactly the kind of cookware that makes cooking feel easy rather than burdensome. Priced under $600, I believe it's genuinely a good investment. The only additional item you might want is a roomy wok for stir-fries.
