If you love cooking, a stunning recipe book is a treasure to explore.

And a shelf filled with them is a sight to behold! However, storing recipe books in the kitchen isn't ideal. Kitchen writer Michael Sullivan cautions against this practice, suggesting they belong elsewhere.

I consulted a professional organizer for tips on creatively displaying cookbooks while respecting their beauty.

Why Recipe Books Shouldn't Be in the Kitchen

Sullivan states, 'You shouldn't keep your cookbooks in the kitchen if you can avoid it.' But what's the reason behind this?

According to Di Ter Avest, a professional organizer and founder of Diisorganized, 'Cookbooks might seem like a natural fit for the kitchen, but they can lead to clutter. In compact kitchens, every inch counts, and it's critical to keep countertops clear for essentials like pots and pans.'

She also warns about potential damage to cookbooks from heat, humidity, and food spills, which can spoil your cherished collection over time.

Alternative Locations for Your Cookbooks

On Dedicated Shelves

'If you have a roomy kitchen, placing cookbooks there can work if done thoughtfully,' explains Ter Avest. Using dedicated shelving solutions can be a lovely feature, as long as they're positioned away from the stove, sink, or dishwasher to protect them from damage. Consider showcasing them in your dining area instead.

'Open shelves can serve as decorative elements too if you arrange books by color or size, and incorporate bookends or a stylish cookbook stand, like the bestselling wishacc Bamboo Book Stand available at Amazon, to enhance both function and aesthetics,' adds Ter Avest.

In a Cabinet or Drawer

If space is tight, storing cookbooks in cabinets or drawers keeps them organized and protected, suggests Ter Avest.

Organize them by cuisine or alphabetically based on your preferences.

In Your Home Office

Incorporating your cookbooks into your home office keeps them accessible while freeing up kitchen space for daily essentials, says Ter Avest – plus, they contribute to the decor.
