Exploring Timeless Interior Design Styles
If you find yourself drawn to multiple styles, you don't have to limit yourself to just one. You can blend key elements from various styles throughout your space—this flexibility is the beauty of interior design and transitional style celebrates personal preference and what resonates with you.
1. Minimalism

Minimalism is perhaps one of the most iconic styles that stands the test of time, characterized by its clean lines and sophisticated appeal. It's perfectly suited for those who appreciate a clutter-free lifestyle with a subtle color palette. Patrick O'Donnell, brand ambassador for Farrow & Ball, shares his insights on selecting the best colors for a minimalist environment:
"While whites may seem the obvious choice for minimalist spaces, consider opting for nuanced whites rather than pure ones. Look for shades with specific undertones—green (James White), blue (Dimpse), or even the softest pink (Great White)—that harmonize with the sparse elements of the interior."

Patrick O'Donnell has consistently showcased his exceptional eye for color at Farrow & Ball since 2012, evolving through roles as Showroom Manager, Global Colour Consultancy Manager, and now Brand Ambassador. He is widely recognized as the beloved face of Farrow & Ball on social media.
2. Farmhouse

The farmhouse decor exudes warmth and charm, characterized by cozy fabrics and worn furniture that tell a story. "My ultimate vision is to find solace in a farmhouse down a winding road where tranquility reigns, and productivity thrives—whether through growing vegetables or caring for animals, surrounded by a delightful chaos of chickens, dogs, and sheep," says textile designer and block printer, Molly Mahon.
"This encapsulates the evocative feeling of 'farmhouse.' While I may not yet own a farmhouse, I strive to manifest that vibe in my decorating. Think solid kitchens with practical floors, lively fabrics, and wall paints that reflect the colors of nature."
The farmhouse style is inviting, with a wealth of charm and character. If you cherish a cozy atmosphere, this aesthetic is perfect for you.
3. Eclectic

While not the first style that comes to mind, eclectic design has gained popularity over the last decade. This approach fosters personal expression through color, pattern, and style. "I believe eclectic interiors are the most timeless," says global interior designer Nicola Harding. "A thoughtfully layered design that respects the building's character and location becomes timeless, as it focuses on a meaningful sense of place rather than fleeting trends, ensuring its longevity."
4. Shaker

The Shaker style radiates appeal through its straightforward yet functional design—nothing embodies timelessness quite like this style, which suits any room of a home. Shaker design is also known for its muted color palette. Helen Parker, creative director of deVOL Kitchens, offers her thoughts:
"To transcend fashion, invest in simple, beautifully crafted cabinetry and furniture. This table exemplifies Shaker design's essence; it is straightforward and functional, without unnecessary embellishments. The top features traditional breadboard ends, keeping it straight and accommodating seasonal expansion and contraction of the wood."

Helen Parker has been a key figure at deVOL since 2004, beginning as a kitchen designer and eventually becoming the Creative Director. Her role involves creating distinctive showrooms, sourcing antiques, and designing various furniture and accessories, all while developing deVOL's unique style and voice.
5. Bohemian

Bohemian style nods to the 1970s, embracing individuality over convention. "For us, 'bohemian' represents a mindset or approach to decor rather than a strict design style. It encourages you to trust your instincts when making choices about your space, mixing high and low, modern and traditional, and diverse materials," advises Rebekah Zaveloff, co-founder and creative director of Imparfait Design.
Consider incorporating vintage decor, retro artwork, and artisanal accessories—this style is profoundly personal and unique. Rebekah adds, "To embrace your inner bohemian, use as much vintage furniture and accessories as you can. This guarantees that your pieces are one-of-a-kind. Mix vintage-inspired brass, gold leaf, and silver leaf frames for your artwork to add character and age, even with contemporary pieces. Vintage rugs are also essential. Bohemian design is uniquely yours, ensuring it never feels like a trend to start with."
6. Classic

Classic interior design emphasizes original features like ornate details, traditional flooring, elegant furnishings, and beautiful fabrics inspired by history. This style is easy on the eyes, with comfortable furniture, the use of symmetry, and gentle color palettes that are soothing. Denise Morrison highlights several features in a timeless kitchen that align beautifully with a classic aesthetic, including double-hung windows, shiplap details, sconces, and flush mount lights instead of recessed lighting, marble countertops, and tailored ogee detailing on the cabinetry. Together, these elements harken back to a bygone era while showcasing enduring design quality," she explains.

From a young age, Denise has been passionate about redesigning her family homes, rearranging furniture to create beautiful and comfortable spaces. She studied at Cal State Fullerton, where she developed her signature design principle: tension. Combining a striking antique with a modern sofa, or a vibrant painting in a minimalist living room, creates a dynamic tension that serves as the foundation for unforgettable design.
7. Modern

Often confused with minimalism, modern design—sometimes referred to as contemporary—embraces a love for form and function, but it can incorporate vibrant colors where minimalism tends to shy away from them. "Creating a modern sanctuary is a timeless design choice. Choosing color schemes inspired by nature, such as soft greens and gentle shades of brown and beige, brings the outdoors in, creating a refreshing and inviting energy. Our deep connection to nature complements the neutral tones found in minimalist spaces, resulting in a warm and welcoming atmosphere," says Tricia Guild OBE, founder and creative director of Designers Guild.
Modern design can incorporate natural materials and patterns. Tricia adds, "A truly modern sanctuary is incomplete without home accessories that provide comfort, such as rugs, cushions, vases, and flowers—all of which unify the room and reflect your personality. There are endless opportunities for creativity, even within the most modern designs."

Tricia Guild O.B.E is the creative force behind Designers Guild, a luxury interior furnishings group that employs over 230 people. Designers Guild is celebrated worldwide for its innovative collections, where colors, patterns, and textures are instantly recognizable for their vibrant, contemporary style.
8. French Country

Don't we all dream of having a home in the South of France? You can save and recreate this leisurely aesthetic in your own space.
"The French country style embodies the charm and warmth of rural France. To achieve this look, consider using subtle colors like beige, cream, and light pastels. Incorporate natural, textured fabrics such as cotton and linen to create a space that feels both rustic and elegant," suggests Tim Walters, managing director of George Spencer Designs.
Add florals, but keep them understated; this style strikes a careful balance between simplicity and patterns. Tim adds, "Delicate florals, subtle stripes, and solid colors are perfect for this style. We particularly love the fabrics in our Liguria Collection, designed to reflect life's simple pleasures and inspired by the concept of 'slow living.'"
9. Art Deco

If you appreciate a design-focused interior that's timeless, consider Art Deco decor. With its bold patterns and striking colors, it's perfect for those who love a rich aesthetic.
"We are drawn to anything with a historical reference, and Art Deco holds a special place in our hearts—many of our wallpapers are inspired by this era," says Jamie Watkins, co-founder of Divine Savages.
Art Deco is known for its geometric patterns, bold motifs, and rich color palette featuring jewel tones. Jamie suggests, "When incorporating a touch of 1920s flair into your home, focus on strong, symmetrical prints with bold, contrasting colors. Our Great Gatsby-inspired 'Deco Martini' wallpaper was our first design, featuring a 'Divine Savages' twist on the iconic Art Deco fan motif, complete with a hidden martini glass within the design."
10. Mid-century Modern

Another enduring classic is mid-century modern—a beautiful blend of vintage, retro, and contemporary design, featuring ample natural wood and a predominantly neutral color scheme.
"Mid-century modernism will always endure due to its clean lines, flat planes, and organic shapes," explains Kasey Hodgson, founder of Roost Interiors. "Warm wood tones and crisp whites complement each other beautifully, especially in a kitchen, where the materials and minimal accessories maintain a fuss-free aesthetic."
This style is perfect for those who appreciate modern aesthetics with the warmth of organic forms, combining graphic design with both natural and manmade materials. Vibrant colors can be introduced through retro artwork and textiles.
