From boosting credit scores to globe-trotting adventures, these couples share their journeys toward financial success and the bond it created between them.
While social media often portrays couples as living perfect lives, it fails to show the effort that goes into maintaining a solid relationship. Sharing dreams, homes, and financial ambitions can lead to tough discussions. However, collaborating to reach financial targets can enhance intimacy and teamwork.
Here are four couples who embraced financial challenges together.
“We boosted our credit score by 100 points.”
Marie Tedrow and her husband, John, bond over gaming and raising their three sons. John is a stay-at-home dad and gamer, while Marie works as a network analyst and Japanese translator.
In June 2019, they set their sights on buying a house but needed to improve their credit scores. They kept track of their progress monthly, which kept their motivation high. To their delight, they achieved their goal just before the holidays in December.
Marie emphasizes that communication was key. “No one enjoys scolding their partner for overspending, but living paycheck-to-paycheck is tough. Instead of viewing our credit score journey negatively, we treated it like a game, supporting each other along the way. Planning our budget together has really unified us. Seeing my husband's smile after paying bills is a joy,” she shares.
“We invested $10K in a brokerage account.”
Jessica and Laurence, a married couple who travel frequently and run a small business together, face unique financial challenges as freelancers. Jessica is a travel blogger, while Laurence captures their adventures through photography.
With fluctuating cash flow and no workplace retirement options, planning for retirement became daunting. They decided to open a brokerage account and invest $10,000 for future growth.
Jessica describes the experience as both thrilling and nerve-wracking. “Researching options was fun, but taking the plunge into the stock market was a bit intimidating. We’re mindful of risks and have our immediate funds secured elsewhere,” she explains.
Now that they’ve met their investment goal, they plan to invest even more in 2020. “We enjoy tracking the markets together, but we keep it in check to avoid unnecessary panic selling,” Jessica notes.
“We traveled around the world for six months.”
Than and Leslie, both busy with their careers—Than as a business operations manager and Leslie as a nutrition counselor—have been working toward four financial goals since their 2012 wedding: getting ahead on bills, investing for retirement, buying a home, and traveling for six months. They’ve successfully checked off all these goals.
Initially, they had different views on money management, which led to conflicts. “In my 20s, I lived a financially unsustainable lifestyle, while Leslie is frugal and focused on paying off debt,” Than says.
Eventually, they learned that planning ahead was essential. By using a budgeting tool, Than confronted his spending habits, while Leslie adjusted her debt repayment strategy. This teamwork led them to their first major achievement.
After saving and utilizing credit card points, they traveled to 24 countries over six months, returning to stay with family for eight months until finding new jobs.
Now, with a second child on the way, they acknowledge that aligning their financial goals was crucial for building the life they envisioned together.
“We opened a second location for our business—and paid it off in cash.”
Nicole and David Pomije have consistently set financial goals throughout their marriage. As business owners, money is a frequent topic between them.
They recently opened a second location for their company. Their plan was to pay for it entirely in cash. Starting renovations in March, they launched the shop in mid-October and fully paid it off by January.
Achieving this goal required careful planning regarding their financial needs during construction and ensuring it fit within their current income. Their eight years of partnership offered them confidence. “Knowing we’re in this together strengthens our relationship,” Nicole states.
