Matt Abrahams provides practical strategies for becoming more confident speakers whenever we take the floor.
While many of us prefer to prepare before speaking, there are moments when we must express important thoughts spontaneously. So, how do we convey our ideas confidently, whether in a casual chat or in front of a packed audience? Matt Abrahams is a specialist in speaking with confidence on the spot, and he authored the bestselling book: “Think Faster, Talk Smarter: How to Speak Successfully When You’re Put on the Spot.”
In this week’s podcast, Abrahams shares valuable insights on enhancing our speaking and listening skills in various settings. Speaking confidently without preparation is crucial, especially in professional environments, as many of us aspire to be seen as leaders in our projects. However, research from Gallup indicates that fewer than half of employees feel they can achieve their career aspirations, meaning many struggle to assert themselves when it counts.
Abrahams emphasizes that there isn't a single “correct” way to communicate. “There are better and worse methods, but if we release the pressure of perfection, we tend to perform better,” he notes.
He suggests a straightforward approach for communicating effectively when caught off guard. Before speaking, he recommends pausing to ask ourselves three questions: What? So What? and Now What?
“The ‘what’ represents my idea, whether it's my product, service, or viewpoint. The ‘so what’ addresses its significance to you, and ‘now what’ refers to the next steps,” he explains. “By answering these questions, I can effectively structure my message.”
