One effective way to enhance the light in your home during the fall and winter months is by cleaning your windows. This straightforward task can significantly increase the amount of natural light in your space, even on the gloomiest days.

While it may seem easy, our cleaning specialists recommend a lesser-known glycerin technique that effectively eliminates dust, dirt, and leaves a long-lasting shine on your windows.

Here are their cleaning tips for optimal results.

Why Is Glycerin Effective for Window Cleaning?

To learn more about this innovative method for cleaning windows with glycerin, I consulted Scott Schrader, a cleaning specialist.

"Glycerin is a reliable tool for window cleaning during the fall and winter months," he states. "Not only does it clean the glass, but it also forms a microscopic barrier that repels dust, fingerprints, and moisture.

"This thin coating keeps your windows clearer for longer and increases the natural light entering your home as days shorten, which can help alleviate seasonal affective disorder, especially when combined with uplifting decor.

Moreover, Karina Toner, another cleaning expert, mentions that glycerin, like the popular Equate Pure Vegetable Based Liquid Glycerin Oil found at Walmart, is gentle and non-toxic, making it an excellent non-toxic cleaning option for those wanting to create a healthier home environment, proving that effective cleaning doesn't require harsh chemicals.

"It leaves a barely noticeable layer that resists dust and moisture," she adds. "This results in no foggy residue, just a clear, streak-free shine. The cleaner your windows, the more sunlight you can let in, which is particularly beneficial on dull, overcast fall afternoons."

To create a safe, streak-free DIY cleaning solution, Isabella Flores, a cleaning expert, suggests mixing one quart (about one liter) of warm water with two to three drops of pure vegetable glycerin [available on Amazon]. Pour this solution into a spray bottle or use a clean, soft microfiber cloth dipped in the mixture.

We recommend using the Great Value Multipurpose Microfiber Cleaning Cloth from Walmart.

"Wipe the glass with the cleaner from top to bottom," Isabella continues. "Then, polish the windows with a clean, dry microfiber cloth to soak up any excess moisture. Your glass will be crystal clear and resist dust accumulation, effectively serving as a homemade cleaning spray that repels dirt.

You can also add a few drops of mild dish soap to your cleaning solution, such as the Dreft Plant-Based Liquid Dish Soap from Walmart, or use a squeegee to wipe your homemade window cleaner across the glass.

"Employ long, smooth strokes from top to bottom, wiping the rubber blade with a clean cloth after each pass," advises Karina.

Extra Tips for Brighter Winter Windows

Above the table are blue glass pendant lights, and to the right are bay windows with striped blinds. In the background are glass doors out onto a patio with a white wall, lit wood burner, log store, and white chairs.

To brighten a room with low ceilings, Isabella recommends starting with a thorough cleaning of windows, screens, sills, and frames to remove dirt and cobwebs. It's best to clean windows on a cloudy day to prevent streaks from quick drying.

"In the winter, avoid heavy curtains or dusty blinds that block natural light. Mirrors and reflective decor positioned near freshly cleaned glass can help bounce light around the room, enhancing brightness throughout the space.

Additionally, Karina suggests trimming nearby shrubs or tree branches, as "clear sight lines allow more light to reach your windows," and opting for light-colored curtain options. "Heavy or dark drapes can obstruct sunlight even on clear days," she notes.
