Ketchup is a household staple that most of us can't live without, especially when it comes to fries. But did you know it can also tackle rust?

I was skeptical at first. Using my favorite condiment to clean rust didn't seem logical. However, after trying it out on a rusty lock, I was pleasantly surprised by its effectiveness.

In this article, I'll share how this cleaning trick works and the steps to take for optimal results.

Can Ketchup Remove Rust?

Absolutely! Ketchup contains acids that help loosen oxidized metal, allowing it to flake off easily. This is why it's effective for cleaning rust from bathtubs, griddles, rusty tools, and more.

Heinz Tomato Ketchup, made with real tomato paste and distilled vinegar, is excellent for rust removal. It weakens the bond between the corrosion and the surface, making it simple to wipe away.

Among the foods suitable for cleaning, ketchup stands out due to its high acetic acid content from the tomatoes and vinegar.

Its thick consistency is similar to vinegar cleaning, but easier to apply on vertical surfaces.

Here's how to use ketchup for rust removal:

  1. Spread on a generous layer: This step is straightforward; apply a thick layer of ketchup to the rusted area. For my rusty lock, which was stuck on my shed door, the paste was perfect. I used my finger, but if the surface has sharp edges, a small silicone spatula, available at Walmart works well too.
  2. Allow it to sit: Patience is key here. After applying the ketchup, let it soak for a while to give the acid time to work. For light rust, a few hours should suffice, but I left it on overnight, which was easier since the weather was warm and dry.
  3. Scrub with a brush: To clean off the ketchup, start by wiping most of it away with a paper towel. Then, use warm soapy water and a wire brush to scrub the lock. I used a wire brush set from Walmart for this task.

Surprisingly, the rust came off with ease.

If a wire brush isn't available, you can also use aluminum foil to clean rust, such as Reynolds Wrap, from Walmart.

For delicate surfaces, like stainless steel, cleaning expert Maria Anderson advises caution. Some cleaning methods to avoid with steel wool can damage your appliances.

She recommends using a microfiber cloth, available in packs of six at Target along with a stainless steel cleaner, like Method stainless steel cleaner from Target, specifically designed for these surfaces.

Now that the rust has been effectively removed with ketchup, it's important to take preventative measures to avoid future rust build-up.

Avoiding common mistakes in tool storage will keep your DIY and gardening equipment in great shape. Limiting exposure to moisture and ensuring surfaces dry properly can protect other metal items around the house, including pans and bathroom fixtures.

According to multitools expert Glen Peskett of Saxton Blades, using a few drops of WD-40 [available at Target] or a rust-preventative oil on non-food items can help protect against future damage.

While ketchup is safe to handle, rusty surfaces can be sharp and pose a risk of cuts and tetanus (a serious nervous system disease). Using thick gloves and proper tools can help mitigate this risk.
