Our team of experts rigorously tests and compares the latest cookware, ensuring you make the best choice for your kitchen. I've tested numerous pots and pans while writing my cookware guide, where Le Creuset consistently ranks highly. I received my first Le Creuset pot as a graduation gift from my mother, who cherished hers since the '90s.
When the brand launched the Modern Heritage collection for its centennial, I was curious. The design mixes retro with modern, and as a long-time fan of Le Creuset's classic look, I wondered if the changes were genuine improvements in functionality or just cosmetic.
After reaching out, I got a Modern Heritage Round Braiser to try out. Long story short: I'm thoroughly impressed.

First Impressions & Design

Le Creuset's Modern Heritage Round Braiser in Brioche – freshly unboxed on my induction stove
The design of the Le Creuset Modern Heritage collection embraces a minimalist mid-century vibe, featuring stainless steel handles, domed lids, wide side handles, and smooth edges. I opted for a classic cream color (Brioche) and was instantly captivated when I unwrapped it, with everyone in the kitchen admiring its beauty.
A standout feature is the upgraded stainless steel lid handle and spacious side handles. They're thick and easy to grip, even with oven mitts on!
These thoughtful modifications enhance safety when lifting the lid or handling a hot pot, minimizing spills and burns. The smooth lid surface replaces the old ridged design, giving it a cleaner, more modern look.
Each piece in the Modern Heritage line is crafted from sand and coated with durable porcelain enamel, ensuring heat resistance. This collection feels robust and is undeniably eye-catching.
Cooking Experience

Simmering diced vegetables in the Le Creuset Modern Heritage Round Braiser
For my cooking test, I prepared my go-to chicken casserole recipe. I started by browning the chicken skin in the Le Creuset Modern Heritage braiser until it was perfectly crispy (see the photo). I easily fit four chicken thighs without any crowding.
Afterward, I sautéed onions, carrots, celery, and garlic in butter. Everything moved smoothly in the pan, with no sticking or burning, achieving a lovely golden color.

Achieving a golden, crispy chicken skin thanks to the enamel cast iron
Next, I added wild rice, stock, herbs, and returned the chicken to the pot, placing the lid on top. The handles felt secure as I transferred the braiser to the oven. I baked for 45 minutes, removing the lid for the last 10 minutes to achieve a crispy finish. Grabbing the domed stainless steel handle with my oven mitts was a breeze, much easier than with the traditional knob.
The final dish featured crispy rice edges and tender chicken, meeting my high expectations for performance. The Le Creuset Modern Heritage collection truly delivers.
Cleaning & Maintenance

The pristine interior of the Le Creuset Modern Heritage Round Braiser
Thanks to its spacious, smooth design, cleaning the braiser was a breeze. Food residue doesn't get stuck on the lid, which lacks knobs and ridges. The stainless steel surfaces benefit from a quick wipe to maintain their appearance, although the brushed finish helps reduce fingerprints. Le Creuset's attention to detail is evident.
While the braiser is reportedly dishwasher-safe, I opted for a simple wash with warm, soapy water, using my trusty silicone scrubber (Amazon). I left it to air dry before remembering that hand-drying cast iron is better to prevent rust. Our cleaning experts have a guide on maintaining all cookware types, which is really useful.
On the storage front, the wide tilted handles do take up space in my cupboards. The lid fit neatly without risking chipping, unlike cheaper cast iron options I've encountered, so I didn't worry too much about scratches in my kitchen.
Comparison to Original

Comparing the Le Creuset Modern Heritage Round Braiser (left) to the original Dutch Oven (right)
I put the Le Creuset Modern Heritage braiser next to my mom's original Dutch oven, which is over 30 years old. The design has subtly evolved, moving from black plastic knobs to metal ones and introducing glossier finishes.
While I love my Signature Dutch oven in Thyme, I found the Modern Heritage model more appealing for its practical handles and mid-century modern charm. Both models are similarly priced, so it truly becomes a matter of personal taste.
My only concern is regarding the longevity of the Modern Heritage line: I wonder how long it will remain in production post-anniversary, and if a complete set will be available over time. I'd love to see the brand explore stackable options like Staub's design, as storage can be tricky. Nevertheless, with such stunning pieces, you'll probably want to display the Le Creuset Modern Heritage collection prominently.
Should You Invest?

If you're passionate about cooking and appreciate thoughtful design, the Le Creuset Modern Heritage collection is a worthwhile investment. From the braiser I tested to matching Dutch ovens and baking dishes, this collection makes an impression and enhances your cooking experience. I should never have doubted Le Creuset's quality.
