With the Lunar New Year approaching, it's the perfect moment to embrace the vibrant Feng Shui energy of the Year of the Horse, starting on February 17.

This year emphasizes balance, as Feng Shui experts suggest decluttering, harmonizing earth and water elements, and toning down bright colors to achieve good Feng Shui in your home.

What Does the Year of the Horse Represent?

After experiencing Feng Shui in the Year of the Wood Snake last year, it's time to shift focus and create a serene home environment for the Lunar New Year.

To learn more about what lies ahead, I consulted Suzanne Roynon, a Feng Shui consultant and interiors therapist. 'The Year of the Fire Horse is about progress, expansion, and forward movement,' she notes, 'but it requires effort to seize opportunities rather than waiting for them to come to you.'

'We may face some upheaval, but from that chaos comes collaboration, creativity, and community. Practices like meditation and reflection can help mitigate the intensity of a Fire year. Those who remain calm and 'ride the horse' will thrive this year.'

Suzanne Butler, another Feng Shui practitioner from Harmonising Energies Feng Shui, emphasizes that the Year of the Horse is anything but subtle.

'It brings movement, momentum, and a desire to break free from limitations,' she explains. 'In 2026, this energy is intensified by Fire, marking it as a Fire Horse year — a dynamic combination not seen in 60 years.'

Horse energy symbolizes speed, independence, and advancement. It doesn't wait for ideal conditions; it acts when something no longer aligns.'

So how can you harness Feng Shui in your home this year? 'Clarity and courage are rewarded this year,' says Suzanne B, 'while stagnation is penalized. You can't just drift in a Fire Horse year. You either move with the energy or feel dragged down by it.'

Here are seven simple strategies our experts recommend for channeling that energy positively in your home:

1. Incorporate Earth Elements

Beverly Biehl, a Feng Shui master and founder of The Intuitive Interior, cautions that while the 2026 Yang Fire Horse year is filled with enthusiasm and optimism, it can also lead to self-destructive tendencies if one becomes too self-focused or hesitant to pursue desires. 'This energetic and playful year needs downtime and solo activities to avoid burnout,' she advises.

To foster this balance, Beverly suggests adding Earth elements such as cozy blankets, plush sofas, and thick rugs to create a calming atmosphere. Incorporating blue hues can also help.

'Teal accents in the center of your home blend the cooling Water element with the energizing Wood element, supporting the Fire,' she explains. The BEDELITE Fleece Throw Teal Blanket, available at Amazon, is a great, budget-friendly choice.

'Shiny surfaces and glossy finishes enhance the Water energy that nourishes the center,' she adds, but be cautious of Feng Shui furniture arrangement.

2. Declutter Your Space

In 2026, Suzanne Roynon states that enjoying life becomes easier without the burden of clutter, as overcrowded spaces can become increasingly burdensome. Thus, it's vital to declutter for optimal Feng Shui.

'As Chinese New Year approaches on February 17, take advantage of the remaining snake energy to let go of unwanted items and begin your spring cleaning early,' she recommends, using decluttering methods that suit your needs. 'This process will release stagnant energy, preparing your home for the dynamic Fire Horse.'

Focus on creating a space that supports momentum instead of hindering it.

Suzanne Butler adds, 'Clutter obstructs the Horse's movement, creating obstacles in your life. If your home feels congested, your life likely does too.'

Start by improving the flow in your home, focusing on pathways, entrances, and high-traffic areas.

'If you find yourself navigating around items, squeezing past furniture, or dealing with piles, your home reflects resistance in your life,' she continues. 'Release what belongs to an outdated version of yourself—clothing you no longer wear, items connected to guilt, or those kept for 'just in case.'

'The west side of your home symbolizes new beginnings; if it's cluttered with old memories, you may feel stuck. Prioritize clearing this area.'

Using a storage basket, available at Walmart can help you decide whether to donate or sell your decluttered items.

Another key area is your front door, which symbolizes opportunity and direction.

'Your front door is where life greets you,' Suzanne Butler points out. 'In a Fire Horse year, it should feel welcoming, not apologetic. Ensure it opens freely, is inviting, and is unobstructed for favorable entryway Feng Shui.'

'The Horse represents evolution. Holding onto what no longer serves you slows you down. Feng Shui is about removing obstacles so you can flow with the energy.'

3. Prepare for Power Outages

This suggestion may seem unconventional, but Suzanne Roynon warns that 2026 could bring infrastructure and power supply challenges, reflecting the balance of light and darkness.

'Having a backup plan with batteries, candles, and portable chargers is wise for unexpected outages,' she advises. Consider preparing your home for a power failure. A home battery backup, like the DREO Space Heater, available at Amazon, is a popular choice.

Learning to connect a generator to your home can be beneficial; though initial costs are higher, they are economical in the long run.

'These moments are invitations to slow down and take breaks from the noise of modern life,' adds Suzanne Roynon.

4. Maintain Calm in the South of Your Home

'Each year, one direction in the compass holds unstable 5 Yellow energy, typically associated with obstacles and misfortune. This year, it's the South, linked to Fame and Reputation. To avoid negative self-talk and misunderstandings, keep this area peaceful and incorporate more Metal items,' explains Beverly.

Suzanne Roynon adds that incorporating mixed metals and soft earthy colors in this area supports good Feng Shui.

'Professionals suggest removing vibrant colors from this zone and keeping it calm for 2026.'

If a complete redesign isn't feasible, consider adding a touch of metal decoration, like the Tarbes Boho Abstract Metal Wall Decor, available at Wayfair, which is stylish and aligns with the Year of the Horse's energy.

5. Minimize Bright Colors

Given that the Year of the Horse is a fire year, one might be inclined to use fiery colors like red, orange, or pink generously in home decor.

However, Suzanne emphasizes the importance of moderation, suggesting to limit these colors to soft furnishings and rugs, such as the Brandt Abstract Indoor Rug available at Wayfair, instead of wall colors or major furniture pieces.

'Excessive fire can be draining and lead to irritability and fatigue,' she warns. 'If you start feeling overwhelmed, dial back the bold hues.'

6. Organize Your Workspace

This year, your workspace is more important than ever, emphasizes Suzanne Butler, as the Fire Horse year values clarity and decisive action.

'A disorganized desk creates mental clutter,' she cautions. 'Purge outdated documents, malfunctioning equipment, and irrelevant notes. Then, introduce one item that represents your future direction rather than your past. Your workspace should symbolize progress, not memories.'

Consider enhancing your desk Feng Shui with plants, candles, or crystals, available at Etsy. You can also make simple Feng Shui adjustments to your home office to improve focus.

7. Embrace the Tradition of 'Rolling in the Gold'

Lastly, Beverly shares the delightful tradition of rolling in the Gold, where you roll nine oranges into your home upon entering on the first day of the Lunar New Year. It's a fun gesture that signals to the Universe your readiness for abundance!

For next Lunar New Year, consider growing your own orange tree with our citrus tree care guide.

'Above all, be decisive about your goals this year,' Beverly advises. 'The Horse thrives when it has clear objectives to chase, so if you have a 'home base' in mind, it will propel you there swiftly. Hold on tight!'
