I spend a lot of time in my kitchen, especially near my fridge.
While I enjoy cooking, a full fridge can sometimes lead to unpleasant odors, especially if you love fish or cheese.
In my quest to eliminate these smells, I found an easy trick that combines coffee grounds and salt to freshen up my fridge. With both ingredients on hand, I decided to try it out—and the results were impressive.
Using Coffee and Salt to Freshen Your Fridge
I discovered this hack through a TikTok video by Anna Knows, known for sharing practical cleaning tips.

In her video, she shared a simple question: 'Did you know about this trick?' Intrigued by her approach to eliminating fridge odors, I decided to test it myself.
What You'll Need:
- Coffee grounds: You can use dried grounds from your favorite coffee maker or buy them, like the Colombian Ground Coffee from Amazon, which is what I used.
- Salt: For this, I chose Great Value Plain Salt from Walmart.
- Aluminum foil: I used Reynolds Wrap Heavy Duty Aluminum Foil from Amazon. That's all you need!
Step 1: Mix Salt and Coffee
Start by placing coffee grounds on a sheet of aluminum foil and add the salt. I used a fork to blend them together thoroughly.
Step 2: Create Ventilation
Poke several holes into the foil. While the original video suggested using a cocktail stick, a fork worked just fine for me.
Step 3: Allow Time to Work
Now, simply wait. I let it sit for 24 hours, and I was amazed by how effectively this simple method eliminated strong odors, keeping my food fresh and the fridge smelling pleasant.
Why This Method Is Effective
You may have heard about coffee grounds being used as fertilizer or in other cleaning methods. But why is this trick popular among those who maintain pleasant-smelling kitchens?
Similar to how baking soda cleans, coffee grounds absorb and neutralize odors, disguising unpleasant smells. This combination also helps reduce excess moisture.
However, it's still crucial to regularly clean your fridge, as this method won't keep it hygienic. A quick sanitizing spray, like Method All-Purpose Cleaner from Walmart, can be used weekly, with a deep clean monthly. If you prefer natural products, consider vinegar for eco-friendly cleaning. Don't forget to check your vegetable drawer, as rotten veggies often contribute to bad odors.
This refrigerator deodorizer is perfect if you want a more long-lasting solution. It works for 10 years and uses advanced catalytic decomposition technology to decompose harmful gases and keep your fridge smelling fresh.
