Design Philosophy

Charu Gandhi

Charu describes her studio's aesthetic as 'thoughtful, cohesive, and sophisticated,' while also incorporating elements of drama and warmth through carefully chosen colors and bespoke handmade items. She believes in capturing the unique hopes and personalities of her clients.

'Collaborating with clients to reflect their personal stories through collections and lifestyle choices is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my work,' she shares.

A Global Perspective

Charu's engaging personality and extensive design knowledge are evident in her thoughtful discussions, shaped by her diverse upbringing.

Growing up in Delhi, with a father leading Apple's computer division in Southeast Asia and a mother who was a passionate silversmith, Charu's early years were filled with travel and exposure to various cultures.

Her father's work took her from California to the East, while her mother introduced her to art, classical music, and Indian craftsmanship. Charu attended the United World College in Singapore, where she interacted with peers from 57 different nationalities, enriching her global perspective.

Influential Mentor

Charu's multicultural background sparked her curiosity about lifestyles, but a significant childhood meeting with a female architect profoundly influenced her design path.

She recalls, 'It began with a childhood mentor when I was about 10. My parents commissioned architect Sujata Kohli to build our home in India. Watching her manage the construction site ignited my passion for design. She combined analytical thinking with creativity—a balance I recognized in myself.'

Sujata, then in her thirties and trained in Florence, inspired Charu, who had interests in both the sciences and the arts. 'She represented everything I aspired to be,' Charu reflects. 'She continues to inspire me as a mentor.'

Architectural Training

Sujata encouraged Charu to apply to the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London—a decision Charu found perfect after considering various global institutions.

The school's independent curriculum and innovative thinkers, including Dame Zaha Hadid, made it an ideal environment for her. Charu describes it as a transformative experience, where every instructor was intellectually and theoretically driven.

After graduating, Charu gained experience with both large and small architectural firms, including design studio Candy & Candy. Starting Elicyon in 2014 was a natural progression fueled by her desire to bridge architecture with decorative design, viewing interiors as spatial experiences.

She notes, 'While I am formally trained in architecture, my passion for the decorative has always been strong. It involves understanding texture, material sequencing, and the impact of light—elements that enrich a space.'

Her team includes an in-house librarian, and they are encouraged to pursue continual professional development through workshops and factory visits. Charu is a strong advocate for craftsmanship, believing all roles—from artisan to builder—contribute to a home's handmade quality.

Elicyon thrives on its diverse talent, bringing together creative minds from various regions, creating a dynamic exchange of ideas. 'This diversity infuses our projects with a global perspective while respecting each client's cultural references,' she explains.

Her team comprises architects, interior and product designers, as well as art historians, many of whom have transitioned from other careers. This rich mix enhances the studio's adaptability and creativity.

Inspiration Sources

'My inspiration often stems from historical references, cultural experiences, architecture, and the performing arts,' Charu explains.

She draws from 20th-century architects like Carlos Scarpa, Tadao Ando, and Oscar Niemeyer, frequently revisiting mid-century, art deco, and Biedermeier styles for furniture ideas, while also exploring diverse global influences.

Admired Creatives

'Numerous artists and designers inspire my work—from visual designer Tim Yip, especially his theater collaborations, to floral artist Jeff Leatham, whose work at the Hotel de Crillon in Paris resonated with me.

I admire artist Dame Rachel Whitread for her unique treatment of voids. Fashion, textiles, and jewelry also play significant roles in my design approach. Currently, I'm captivated by the vibrant pieces from Valery Demure's Objet d'Emotion collection and the exquisite garments by Rianna + Nina.

Charu's Design Strength

'My design strength lies in a trio of skills: my multicultural upbringing, the integration of architecture and interior design, and strong business insights,' she notes.

'Understanding my limitations is also crucial. A project's success depends on the team you cultivate and mentor. It's essential to recognize the incredible creatives around you, many of whom thrive in collaboration.'

Key Design Principles

'The client should always be at the forefront of the design process. Their vision and investment guide every project, making them integral to the journey of creating a home.'

Ongoing and Upcoming Projects

'We recently completed a substantial 20,000 square foot family residence in Dubai and an expansive five-bedroom apartment in Knightsbridge, inspired by the sun-bleached aesthetics of Ibiza and Mykonos. The client, an art enthusiast, wanted ample gallery space for contemporary pieces.

Looking forward, we're taking on beautiful homes in London, exploring projects in the South of France, and expanding into yacht design, with two private projects underway in Dubai.'
