With summer just around the corner, it's time to maximize our outdoor enjoyment!
While I'm eager to tackle outdoor projects as the weather warms up, I usually wait until pollen season wraps up and temperatures stabilize before enhancing our outdoor areas.
As a professional organizer married to a landscaper, I have my own approach to getting our yard summer-ready. Here are my top four tips:
1. Update Worn Accessories

Given our mild climate, most of our patio decor stays out year-round. While this allows us to enjoy our space continuously, it also means accessories wear out faster than if stored away during the off-season.
Each year, I assess what needs replacing. Old, faded rugs, pillows, and decor can make your space feel cluttered. So, swap out any items that didn't survive the winter.
Additionally, I like to refresh outdoor cushions and remove mildew from the deck to ensure a safe, slip-free area for summer fun.
2. Organize Hobby Items and Accessories
If your family enjoys outdoor activities, you likely have a variety of hobby-related gear. Items like gardening tools, pool supplies, grilling equipment, and sports gear can quickly accumulate.
Organize these items just like you would indoors. Think about how each area is used, and group related items together in labeled bins for easy access.
3. Assess Storage Options

Determine whether items can be stored outside or if they need protection from the elements in a garage or shed. For example, outdoor garden stations are ideal for keeping gardening tools organized. Grilling tools can go on the grill's bottom shelf or in an outdoor kitchen.
We store fragile items, such as surfboards and pool floats, in shaded areas to prevent discoloration and damage. Like organizing indoors, I prefer to keep items elevated off the ground. Utilize wall space in garages or sheds to keep larger items off the floor.

4. Embrace Minimalism
As you replace old items or consider new purchases for the season, remember that each item requires upkeep. Not only will you need to clean items, but if you're in a hurricane-prone area, everything outdoors must be secured. Ensure that what you buy is worth the maintenance it demands.
I hope these organizing suggestions help you stay on track while enjoying your summer activities. If you're in the mood for productivity, consider tackling these outdoor cleaning tasks as well!
